Carnelian
hello,
Mods I've posted this thread under the "Fire & Stoves" as the content will become aparent. I've found a few pieces of Carnelian which is an orange colored variety of Chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz family these nodules measure 2" x 2" inches. I placed the nodule upon a sheet of J cloth when I was sitting outside to bring out the colour for effect. http://gem5.com/stone/24/carnelian/ which I've been using this with my fire steel with some effect it does shew sparks, tried & tested on amadou, charcloth, & a thin slice of King Alfred cake (crampball). I received a positive identification via one of my "stone kicker" friends & found these details online (see link). Another nice find for the FSK pouch.
Regards
David

Beautiful colour, I bet these would look great as arrow heads...
Do they flake like flint ?

hello Woody,
I've seen these made into jewellery & I suppose they could be shaped into arrow heads with a little work. Carnelian & Chalcedony are both semi-precious stones which are both forms of quartz similar in structure to flint, agate, jasper, obsidian, onyx & opal.
Regards
David
