    Horse hoof?

    Hello all.
I found this growing on Holm oak. In Cornwall. Pretty far south for the species but does anyone know if this is fomes fomentarius?

Picture off the underside didn't work I'm afraid.

    How did I miss this?!

Yup,it certainly looks like horse hoof fungus, and if it is, it's an incredible find this far south!
I suppose there's only one way to find out buddy 👍😉

Looking at that size , you should get enough Amadou to equip your local scout group and some...

I had decided, since posting that it didn't look right. The way it has several distinct growth layers, like ridges, isn't right for F. fomentarius. It should be one smooth curve. Artist fungus maybe? I'll keep looking.

Yep, if I'm not mistaken , I think you can make a hearth board out of it too, it will help create an ember much quicker than any wood iirc 👍😉
