Thread: What to consider when buying a tent?

What to consider when buying a tent?

I'm now stuck in a dilemma on what tent I should buy.
For a long time I've been borrowing tents, but now that I've saved up some money, I want to buy my own.
But now I'm spoilt for choice, and at the same time limited by my budget.

I'm going to buy one online, but I'm not sure what to consider.
I know that the tent should house at least two people and it should be durable to handle the harsh jungle rain.

    What else am I missing?

Weight and packed size are important considerations, plus ideally if you can get one that has space between the inner (bedroom) and the door then you can store gear there and cook if it's raining. For the jungle I also assume that plenty of ventilation is important too.

    Hope this helps,

One more thing - if it rains a lot (rain forest!) then try and find one where you can put up the outer and then the inner. Some tents need the inner setting up first and if it's pouring with rain, then your bedroom will be wet before you get the outer on.

The North Ridge Torre is a great tent, I have the XL but the standard is good as well, loads of room both for sleeping and storing kit / cooking.

    Consider the following:

-Outer pitch first as Ehecatl suggested.
    - light and compact enough to carry.
    - "bathtub" style floor (keeps water out)
    - fire retardant ( if possible)

They can be expensive with that criteria , so if that's above budget then just use a tarp instead like this:

It's lighter and still gives you dry area without being closed in.

As a add on you can get a bug net to go over your sleeping area , to keep bugs out.

Or you can get a jungle type Hammock with bug net included and set it under the tarp...

Hope it helps even if it's not strictly tent advice...

Oh, and the hammock will probably be the best night sleep you will have outdoors...

Here's a little more info on jungle hammock:

I was having a moment, missed the part about jungle as above, tarp and hammock, depending on which Jungle and the beasties to be encountered ?

I have never tried a jungle hammock before -- it sounds like something I should add to my repertoire.

Another thing: what do you guys think of those 'quick set-up' or 'automatic folding' tents?

I've browsed some shops for tarps; some of the tarps seem substandard and others have prices that made me choke.

If I'm going for a cheap tarp, what should I be looking for?
