Not easy without seeing for real but...Smooth bark, opposing branch growth..Ash sapling perhaps?

It's not easy, without a picture of the leaves.
Looks like Elder, but that's just a guess...

If the pith ( centre) of the stick feels spongey then could be Elder...

    hello Diviy,
maybe a wider angle shot of the length of the wood? trees native to Wales Oak, Ash, Birch, Willow, Alder, Beech, Hazel.. why not just try it out make a board & drill, see if you can produce an ember, if it proves worthy, go out & resource some more.
    Regards
    David
Ps. throw it if it doesn't come back.. it's definitely a stick.

Hmm...it's not elder. Wrong bark for elder.
I was thinking ash, if I'm honest.
It is hard to tell much from that picture. If not ash then maybe rowan?

Where did you find it? What was the habitat? Was the tree it belonged to nearby and, if so, what did it look like (size, shape, colour of leaves, shape of leaves)? It's going to be hard to say what it is from that picture.
Saw one end off cleanly and show us a picture of the end. And a picture of the bark (in focus!).
