Punk Wood i.e. rotting decaying wood, this can be charred also. Please be careful how you store this preferably outside as there's fungi & other insects associated with decaying wood you wouldn't want inside your home.

I spent an entire summer looking for that stuff around here. And found plenty. The trouble was that it was all wetter than spunge at the bottom of the North sea. That stuff really soaks in water in wet climates like ours. I tried drying some but never managed to make it take a spark. Luckilly I know have a place to collect Chaga :-)

Difference between camping and Bushcraft is exactly that though , surely?!

You take the time to learn, prepare and make something so it works for you as and when required, whilst gaining a new skillset, or .... you can't be bothered with all the fuss so you just buy the gear... because life's too short and we got to get on with the job at hand...

    Matches or flint+steel?

Flint and steel for me, every time!

    Just my twopence.

If we are going to have that discussion...again.

    With me it depends:

If I am wet, tired, cold and just want to get that fire going so that I can get some hot grub down my neck, and get warm: Bic win every time.
If the above does not apply, I use flint and steel...I have even used flint and steel to get my Optimus 111 going, lol

    hello,
The nomadic aboriginal people of our country pre-modern times used dried Sphagnum moss or punkwood inside what could have been a deer or buckskin hide wrap which was one type early diaper (nappy). Both materials hold an amazing amount of liquid and even has some antibacterial properties. In addition to the other valuable posts & comments made on this thread, It's great to see the various methods of fire lighting skills being used here matches or flint+steel? = both, always be prepared to use what you have in your kit & please remember, one of our up & coming Bushcraft forum members Woody Jnr. is still on a learning curve out with Woody Snr practicing Bushcraft skills. As Rune say's if you have pine trees near you, just go out & break off some of the dead, dry branches at the bottom of the tree or if it's uprooted the turpentine soaked roots make excellent tinder too highly inflammable
    Regards

I look forward to playing with some of this punk wood, and charring it like you and Gerry said.

    Thanks David
