    "Magnif-i"

    hello,
I thought this maybe of interest to NBCUK forum members. I received through a rep from http://www.thatcompanycalledif.com some plastic credit card sized "Magnif-i" lens (4 pack) which may have a possible use for fire lighting. I've been informed rrp. £1.99p. I've been successful in the past *pending the Scottish weather, creating a fire using a magnifying glass along with a similar plastic credit card sized sheet I picked up at the optician's for free. These "Magnif-i" cards measure 85mm x 54mm made from solid rigid 'fresnel' lens come in a PVC sleeve. The cards themselves have a built in clip along the top used as a page mark or could be useful to affix a lanyard? ideal item the "Magnif-i" if proven to work as a method of fire starting for the EDC kit or FSK tin/pouch. A number of Bushcrafters State side have used similar with effect, after all they have the glorious sunshine unlike here in the UK. *Image 2 similar sized same spec credit card sized fresnel lens.
    Regards
    David

    hello,
Bump.. Whoo Hoo.. they work. Holiday weekend Saturday up in Lanark Clyde Valley. It was for once into double figures brilliant sunshine so I went walkabout from early morning. Anyway I thought I'd take one of the "Magnif-i" out with me & give it a try. My tinder selection char cloth, amadou, & a combination of fuzzed cotton/lint with sulphur matches (made from cocktail sticks) all ignited in no time at all. Definitely going in the EDC kit bag as it takes up very little to no room at all.
    Regards

    hello diviy,
Sorry I can't assist. I would suggest asking at your local opticians, they sometimes have similar plastic credit card sized magnifying lens cards at the counter.

Remember that with solar fire ignition, size matters. Thus a larger, lower powered lens will out perform a smaller, higher magnification lens. We can think of the lens as a funnel gathering photons.
