This is sad , and just reiterates the importance of sound navigation skills .
a map and a good compass is important but not as important using it appropriately, checking progress regularly, pace counting etc.
Sounds like this lady was a seasoned hiker , and probably had lots of experience on the trail but the sheer scale of the area combined with going off trail was a mistake.
RIP Mrs Largay
This happens every year in Norway too, that they find the bodies of people that have been lost for a long time. I do think that people overestimate their own abillities, and also what their kit can do for them in terms of providing them with survivabillity and safety.
ANd then you have the type who just wander off into the hills with their mobile phone as their only navigation aid, because it works so great in their car!
Victory awaits the one, that has everything in order - luck we call it
Defeat is an absolute consequense for the one that have neglected to do the necessary preparations - bad luck we call it

Something as simple as this http://www.coghlans.com/products/orange-trail-tape-1018 (trail tape) could have resulted in a different outcome or even some matches, but I guess we'll never know that exact set of circumstances that led to this tragedy. Hopefully her family can begin to move on now.

That's powerful stuff. That woman had guts. I have huge respect for people who can keep it together even in the darkest hour.“When you find my body, please call my husband George and my daughter Kerry. It will be the greatest kindness for them to know that I am dead and where you found me — no matter how many years from now.

The Appalachian trail is a hard slog, even a map and compass may not save you. If I was young enough and fit enough for these type of treks I'd want a Spot beacon and sat phone. http://www.findmespot.com/international/

Have you read Bill Brysons book, 'A Walk in the Woods'? He walked the Appalachian Trail, well not all of it, but enough for it to a damn good book. One section he recounts is the panic he felt when he did this very thing, and the way the trees simply closed in on him and suffocated him!
I really feel for this poor lady, I am damn sure if they had found my diary in such a situation everyone would know I was not so brave, composed and dignified as Mrs Largay. Large parts would have been unprintable!
R.I.P. Dear Lady.
I'll keep a look out for that book.
