    My Grandfather's Compass

I just recently got ahold of my grandfather's compass, it had been lost in the bottom of a drawer for many years since he passed, until a few weeks ago when I stumbled across it.

Really means a lot to me since it is the same one that he taught me how to use when I was young, its nice to have a link to those memories.

Anyone here know anything more about it???
It apears to be quite old, only marking is "Made in France".

Sorry - I can't be of any help with information but it's a lovely piece.

Priceless. You now have to continue the chain, pass on the knowledge and memories to your own children/grandchildren.

Wow...you don't see those anymore . Not sure either, but I imagine it was carried in the pocket attached to a chain...looks like it's made of brass.

Did your grandfather serve in France during WWII?

These compasses are mostly pre-WWII production - but they were often obtained by allied soldiers, in France, after D-Day.

    hello,
Beat me to it Jeep. I've seen these used by re-enactors Don't quote me I'm sure these were pre-WWI? & I can confirm your details being obtained by allied soldiers, in France, after D-Day. Nice piece BTW. http://compassmuseum.com/ might be worth a browse too.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, but thank you for all the replies.

My grandfather was not in WW2, but my great grandfather was in Europe durring WW1, so maybe the compass was his that he had passed down to my grandfather.
Thats a pretty interesting thought actualy, it would mean that the compass is even older than I thought.
