Old file,or if you have access to a motor cycle security chain, cut a link off it,remove the antirust coating n youve got a steel that wont wear out!!!Have a look at www.sharktinderbox.co.uk they have a ready made selection.for little money...good company to deal with too!! atb.mike

Easiest thing to use is a piece of an old file (as midas says). Just cut about 3 inches off of the end with an angle grinder, then grind the striking edge flat (or the teeth of the file will destroy your flint quickly). It will throw sparks like that, but it would be best to heat it in a forge to cherry red, then quench in vegetable oil. No need to temper it, as you want it hard.

If you want to make something a little fancier/traditional looking, then you can use a narrow file, or cut a file down the middle, either cut or forge the ends to tapers, then forge small curls right at the tip of each taper, then forge the ends into "U" shapes around a bar, to get the "knuckle duster" type shape.

I've made a video on forging a tiny striker, but I shall make another video soon for a standard one, if you fancy having a crack at forging your own.

I would love to make my own but I don't have the room or the equipment to make a forge.

You could use a BBQ/charcoal n blower or even a Blow Torch to heat up the file to "cherry red" before quenching.

If you could get a half decent blow torch (similar to this one), and a couple of soft kiln bricks, you can make a mini forge that would be ok for these purposes

(like the one below) Note the one below has remote line, so the bottle isn't upside down

You can get a handmade one for £12 from here. It comes with leather pouch and a flint
