Just come across a old broken three legged cobblers last in a charity shop. One of the feet has broken off and it looks like it could have been used as
small anvil. Given that its probably cast iron would it be any good?

it will be fine for flattening a bit of copper wire for jewelry, but I wouldn't use it for forging steel on! It will be too flexible and will ring like a bell as well as most likely breaking. In all honesty you would be better off with a piece of granite kerb stone!

Used railway track makes a really good cheap anvil. If you can get the old style with a flat bottom even better.
Very hard to find RR track in the UK, especially at a reasonable price. Usually best to keep an eye on eBay, as there are often 1cwt (51kg ish) anvils for around £60-£100, which would do a better job than most things, as long as they are steel, not iron, or at least have a nice thick steel top/face.
You can get Railway track from someone who works on the gang repairing the track if you ask them nicely.
