Thread: What're you foraging right now?

    What're you foraging right now?

I like to open a new tread for all the forager in the forum! But also for all here, who are new to the topic.

We can go together through all the seasons of the year, share our recipes, give us new ideas, what to forage right now and bundle all related foraging tread links here.

I maintain this tread and will put everything new in the beginning of it, like shown below.

Please don't write only the name of the plants you foraged! Make a picture, so everyone can see how it looks right now and explain shortly why and which plant parts you're foraging.

Not just edible plants, but also plants for tinder, cordage, weaving, home remedies and so on. You can add the same plant for different plant parts and uses! Like mullein..., the flowers in spring, the seeds in fall and the dried plant in winter for tinder, fireboards and handdrills.

When you find something in the deeps of the forum, that's time related to actual foraging tasks, put the link in.

Their are so many plants you can forage, that you sometimes don't know which is best in the moment or maybe you wait to long and miss it then. I think this tread will help us also to be up-to-date with foraging and all related tasks.

    It starts right now with...

Nothing. Right now I'm on the computer.

However, weekend just gone I collected some blackberries to make bramble brandy (made just like sloe gin - 1lb blackberries, 1L brandy, a cup of sugar. Then leave to steep for three months, strain, bottle, and enjoy at Christmas time).

I'm also keeping an eye on the hazlenuts, hoping to get them just as they turn brown but before the squirrels have nicked them all.

A good idea for a thread, by the way. Should be made a sticky.

Yes, it's tricky with the hazelnuts! I also have an eye on them right now...

    Thanks,

Today I go for haws and crab apples, when it's not raining again!
Yesterday I found a patch of tansy and get me some.

I want try the autumn biscuits recipe I found on this side!

I never tried the Himalayan balsam nuts, but I saw some patches a couple of days ago...and will give it a try.

There's a lot of useful information about edible plants on this side. I only looked it over but it looks nice.

    Bye,
    Alex

Hi! Recently I've been foraging for:

    Elderberry
Sloes (I know it's early but they're ripe and soft already!)
    Blackberry
    Apples
    Samphire
Haws (we have s few trees local that they grow about 12mm across!!)

Does anyone have any good recipes for haws?

    Cheers,

    Steve

Picked 38lb of wild plums last week. They are now steeping in fermentation buckets ready to make 30 litres odd of plum wine.

Love blackberries, but eaten all by the time I got home LOL, leave the hazel nuts for the squirrels, something my gran insisted on, back in the day. Not alot of sloe's, and no plums at all this year, cheers Ian......
