    Flying Things

I was out for a wander on the North Downs today to see what butterflies and moths I could...er...see.

Saw plenty of Spotted Burnetts on the thistles:

And I also saw one of these. I've no idea what it is, so would really appreciate it if anyone knows:

And then quite out of the blue a Lesser Spotted Hurricane came flying over doing a barrel roll...

    Oh yeah.
And does anyone know what this is (the plant, not the insect sitting on it)?

The moth (actually, turns out it's a butterfly) is an Essex Skipper.

I'd still love to know what the plant is.

The lesser spotted Hurricane could be migrating to its summer mating grounds.

You know what, I think you're right!

I was hoping it was some kind of orchid - certainly the right habitat for one.

    Cheers

Nice pic of the Hurricane. An unsung hero of WW2, they dropped more german aircraft than the Spitfire ever did.

Yup. The Hurricane was the workhorse of WW2. Think the Spit still holds the air speed record for a prop driven aircraft though.

I think it's fair to say that the Spitfire is exactly what an aeroplane should look like and sound like.
