    Patina Advice needed.

    Hi guys,
As the title says needing some advice.
I'm about to start my little project and its going to involve a patina on an axe head. Just hoping for ideas and materials used. I'm looking at the easiest method of a vinegar soaked rag and leave for an hour. Anyone tried anything else more adventurous?

Vinegar, mustard, even slices of tomato all work well, leave for a lot longer than an hour!

That knife looks excellent! Always thought the patina effect was some kind of expensive forging technique, didn't realise how easy it can be done. I'm going to leave it overnight and see the results and a spy dreck knife. Looks like the more random the splodges the better the effect. Thanks

I did an axe and my leuku last year. I wrapped the axe head in baby wipes, then soaked them in vinegar and left over night. Here is a video showing the process.

    That.

If you use a vinegar soaked rag then you'll put a flat patina over the whole blade (which is no bad thing - the patina helps protect the steel). But if you want something more decorative then use some tommy k, or mustard, or salad cream - any of those condiments that have a lot of vinegar in them. Then use them to draw a pattern on the blade rather than smeer it all over.
The longer you leave it on the metal the darker the pattern will be. I'd say give it a few hours.
If you don't like the design then it can easily be taken off with a quick whizz with some extra fine wet-and-dry.

I used colmans ready mix mustard to give a Zebra type pattern, Like Humakt says, make a pattern for a decorative effect, I like mine
