Returned this afternoon from five nights in the wood, mild but unsettled with occasional heavy rain at night..
Thought I'd mention the rain as I managed a personal best..Four fires from one match..
Lit the fire on day one and it lived for four days and nights, even through a couple of rainy nights. This is a small individual cooking fire...not a whacking big communal burnup!! that's easy.
Woke up to find the world soaking wet but a tiny curl of smoke coming from a Silver Birch log..quick!! Tinder and away it went. It died last night though so I had to light a rubbish burning fire this morning..
The wood is full of Bluebells and the stream banks have enough Ramsons growing there to keep an army of Wild Garlic munchers happy for weeks..
Camped in the wood in January and February when the wood is silent and seems to crackle with the cold, I always look forward to the time of Beltane and sleeping amongst the Bluebells. The past few nights have been special as a Nightingale had found some cover to it's liking near the great fallen Beech.
Such a plain little bird but such a beautiful song, I'm sure every creature in the wood without exception, listened in the darkness
The camo net is purely to break up the 'shine' of the tent fabric. I'm fairly certain by their behaviour that the tent is less alarming to the forest folk that way. The Badgers waddle by and give their claws a sharpen on the dead tree without seeming to mind me snoozing away 10 feet from their trail..Woke me up with their scratching manicures!!

I heard this kill just as the evening sun went down. Quick and efficient, I'm guessing Sparrow Hawk because I hear their call very often., that Keck-keck noise they make. There are Buzzards in the area too but I think they prefer more open country rather than woodland hunting. Must get a grip of my Bird ID's..
Left the wood about Midday and noticed the Primroses and Orchids are soaking up the sun on the lane banks that lead down to the wood.
Looking at the Introductions section I see we have been joined by more recruits in my absence, so hello folks, welcome aboard..
