    Jonny's Yurt fred..

I have been wanting to make a yurt for some time now and have now got going on it..
The plan is for a 20 foot (ish) sized one made from whatever I can get my hands on.
So far I have been given a door and frame, the top cover star and two halves of pre bent crown rings (the circle bit that all the roof poles go into).
I am sourcing all the roof poles from ash trees growing on the farm here, and I have found a load of lengths of chestnut in the log pile that will do for the trellis sections, lots of splitting needed doing there..

I have already cut about 20 roof poles and shaved off the bark and set them in a jig to bend them into shape. Its easier to bend them when green as it saves having to steam bend them..

I made up a brake to do the shaving on..

I have started splitting down some of the chestnut. Its hard going cos its seasoned. I made up a jig for them to go in as they have a bend in too. its only a slight bend, so I am hoping some time in the jig will make them take the shape, otherwise I will have to sort out a steamer or boiler..

This is going to be a long job, so I will update as n when

Just got back from staying in a yurt (in Devon) and would love one in my back yard, good luck with the project
