Thanks for all the concern for the guys and gals down here in Cornwall.
Its rained, and its rained hard on and off for nearly a week now with wind speeds of around 70mph. This is the first real storm of the Winter and no doubt we will have a few more in the next couple of months. The thing about watching the weather on TV is that it always seems worse than it really is. Yes, people have been flooded out and lost carpets and possesions, and yes trees have come down with the winds but this happens most years down here. A lot of the flooding is usually the roads and this makes the news but the next day most of it is gone and you are left with a bit of silt to clear up.
The British love a good weather story, we are always talking about it but as far as it goes in Cornwall, we have this wet, miserable, damp and windy weather every year. There are still a few flood warnings in the area and one which is a major one in Helston but the weather forcast is looking a lot better now.
Once again, thanks to you all for your concern.
Cheers Neil
Been out on another call this evening, house right next to the river flooded and problems getting electrics working again. Daft thing was that the river didn't cause the flood, it came down from the woods on the other side of the road, through the house and garden to get to the river!
What Neil said...
Last year, they made out that Cornwall was under water, when it was only a couple of roads in St Blazey and Lostwithiel. The BBC are, without doubt, the worst news organisation I have ever come across. Pretty much every news article they broadcast seems to be littered with exaggeration and inaccuracies.
As far as I'm concerned, if you want to know what's really happening, don't watch the BBC!

Cant really agree with that. BBC Look North have always reported on incidences I have direct knowledge of with accuracy and truth.
Maybe its a regional thing?
Anyway as long as you are all safe

You could be right there mate.
Look North and Calender do seem to give you the facts. I watch both shows every now and then to keep up with the news up north. When it was based in Plymouth, Westcountry News was ok, but since it changed and included half of the country it seems to have slipped a little.
My dear old gran used to love Peter Levy !!
Bits of localised flooding here In Rotherham... both the Don, and the Rother are inches away from the tops of bridges closeby....
Best get prepped.......... (Whistles and looks up)..

BBC South West are definitely DISASTER junkies, any excuse to lay it on a bit think and they jump at it. I actually find it quite funny.
As has been said above, if you have lived in Cornwall for a reasonable length of time, you soon know what to expect and how best to deal with it. There will always be freak incidents like Boscastle that by their nature are difficult to predict, prepare for, but generally speaking as Cornwall is the anti Netherlands, if you live up the hill you batten down the hatches against the wind and keep an eye open for leaks when it rains.
If you live down the hill, you putt cotton wool in your ears to block out the sound of laughter from up the hill

I'm not only talking about local news (although, that just seems amateurish). Just look at the whole of the BBC output. If I was as inefficient at my job, I'd be out on my ear. They are politically biased and frequently factually incorrect. Just recently, look at the Jimmy Saville cover up and the Lord McAlpine libel.
This article, in The Daily Telegraph, illustrates my point quite nicely I think.

Sadly, the BBC is supposed to be a public service broadcaster but seems bent on fulfilling its own political agenda rather than informing the public.
