    Lightbulb Leatherworking Kit from Japan

    Hi Guys/girls,

I fancied giving leatherworking a go so I've just had one of these delivered:

Seems well made (Japanese) and pretty sturdy components, so I'll let you know how I get on with it. Getting my leather from Le Provo:

...as they seem a lot cheaper than Tandy Leather (IMHO):

Thanks Fletching, I've been thinking for a while about making my own possibles pouch. You've now shown me where I can get the tools and leather to do so. Hope they've been holding up ok. What's the tool on the far right for?

It's an adjustable groover, you set it as per your want, and run the shaft of the tool alongside the edge of your leather, while the little right angle thingy cuts a groove parallel to the edge of the leather shape. Literally, it's to let the stitches sit recessed so there is less chance of abrasion.

Thanks for the quick response and clear explanation. Seems so obvious now

Don't forget to stick a bit of cork tile (or similar) under the leather whilst your using the awl or you might damage the tip (I did but filed it sharp again).

Not bad at all. I broke the tip of the awl off (being a beginner, I just poked through the leather into hard wood, and not soft wood or cork) but managed to file it into a point again. I've only used one wheel on the stitching spacer and I'm quite happy with the pouches I've made so far (see threads on leatherworking for pics), but I haven't gotten down to working with thick leather yet.

Since I bought this set, I've seen a lot of antique bits and pieces on fleabay that I would build a leatherworking set from, but for a beginner, this is a good starting set.

No probs. You'll find some pics of some of the stuff I made with the kit here.
