    Getting to Dartmoor

    Hi guys,

It's been a while, having had another breakdown and managing to alienate just about everyone I know!

I want to get away for a while and thought that visiting one of the youth hostels in Dartmoor would be a good break and a chance for me to explore a little and do a bit of camping on the moors.

What would be the best railway station to go to, and are there buses that could get me to Postbridge?

    Cheers,

    Ken

Hi Ken. Dartmoor is HUGE so 'best train station' may well depend where you are travelling from.

Yes there are buses that can get you to Postbridge from all over the place - As an idea, it's about a 90 minute ride out of Plymouth.

I use http://www.transportdirect.info to give me an idea of best routes on public transport.

    Ken,

Sorry for the late reply - I didn't know this site existed until yesterday!

Your best bet - for a train - is to get to Exeter and then from there catch the ("summer" only) train to Okehampton.

Right at the Okehampton station is a YHA hostel, and an excellent base to get out on to the moor - so that would seem to me to tick all your boxes.

I used to live in Oke and have visited the train station on several occasions - it's manned by volunteers and the cafe does an excellent cooked breakfast - ideal for setting off.

If you wanted, you can walk along the footpath next to the train line between the Oke station & the quarry station right at the edge of the Meldon viaduct - walk over the viaduct to get to the Meldon reservoir and that will start you off.

I've only been on the moor in the day time and I'm planning on my first overnight trip out when the rain stops (probably never then?!), so it would be good to hear any feedback

    Cheers

Bit of an open ended question on that one. Where in Exeter to where on Dartmoor could effect the cost quite a bit.

Here are some links with contact numbers to get costs

    http://www.nationalparks.gov.uk/visi...eldartmoor.htm

    http://www.journeydevon.info/greatjo...day-rover.ashx

    http://www.dartmoorwalks.org.uk/resource/transport.php

    http://www.touristnetuk.com/south-we...es/default.asp

Just typed in dartmoor buses into google and came up with these but its a pain in the rear to deal with the Bus websites to get prices (not user friendly unless you know the route numbers)

I meant in the postbridge area, just checking incase anybody here had any experience with buses from exter to give a rough idea of price. I know what you mean its a pain getting prices from the their websites, will look more into it, thanks.
