    Acronyms and Aide Mémoires

I taught PLAN (Protection, Location, Acquisition, Navigation) for years at Trueways, because that's the way it was taught there and it made sense at the time. Since then, I've been in contact with some of the old students and noted that they had mostly forgotten some aspect of it. I have found that those who have learnt PLAN and had it justified could often remember the order of priorities (Shelter/Fire, Rescue/Signals, Water, Food, Navigation/Escape) and reasoning, but not the aide mémoire in itself. I've heard a few others and I don't think that any of them have any real use and the time spent trying to learn them by rote is better served learning a little more about the human body, SAR and nature. That way, knowledge informs decision and we can be more dynamic.

I've written a little article on the matter.

Erm, OK, how about this one to remind you how to pack your bag - what goes on top, what goes in the bottom etc:

    Cover on top
    Other items
    Cooking stuff
    Kip mat

I find it depends on an individuals learning style...personally I love them, they help me remember lots of things particularly at test time.... medicine is full of them.(which is my 'specialist' area)

The medicine and first aid ones are great, but that's because they prescribe a definite order within a protocol and actually make sense

Not necessarily. I'm thinking of the ones that help your remember signs and symptoms, illnesses et al like 4 H's and 4 T's the reversible causes of cardiac arrest and FISH SHAPED...the common causes of unconsciousness to name but two

While I think on the military has more than its fair share. GRIT, CLAP and PAWPERSO are the ones that immediately spring to mind
