teacher training, good excuse for a picnic!

A week ago today should have seen the boys back at school, but as the calendar said, school closed for teacher training, we had to make other plans. As it didn't look like torrential rain all day we decided a paddle and picnic would be in order. Our first this year too.

A quick forage through the fridge, freezer and kitchen cupboard for burghers, hot dogs and salad stuff, we shoved some kit in the car and headed off. A short while later the boat was on the water and we were on our way.

We saw plenty of flowers in bloom on the way with flag iris, water lilies among those brightening the canal side. We heard the Cuckoo too, which was in nearly the same place that we last heard it two years ago. The Reedmace is starting to grow, but only a few of the old heads remain to aid in firelighting. We soon arrived at our usual picnic spot and Ali got a brew on with Dr Zarkov's stove once the tarp was up to shelter from the threatening weather while I set about gathering some firewood.

The fire was soon lit so we enjoyed our drinks while the fire burnt to embers to cook over.

Before long the burghers were on and cooking well. Mmmmmmmm!

After a hearty picnic, Ali took the boys off to play Pooh Sticks while I sorted out the packing up. The weather held for us, so the tarp/brolly setup kept the rain away.

Back on the water, Charlie took over the bow paddlers seat and worked hard paddling all the way home.

The next picture will be familiar to anyone who's taken children (of any age!!) in a canoe.

It'll be a while before Will paddles as well, but he is showing promise.

Back home, both boys agreed that they'd enjoyed their paddle more than a school day.

    Thanks for reading folks.

    Al
