Was was thinking if you had stuff on the roof, then you could put a chequer pate pane over the top of it all for transit, giving you your roof rack back. If, however, you're going to put a tent up there, then you might want to consider mounting solar cells on a sliding panel which you pull out. Something like that

Interesting idea, Steve. S'pose the sliding panels could go under the roof rack and slide out from there. Could also put solar panels on top of the roof tent if it's of the Maggiolina type (has a fibreglass shell). Cheers!

If the cells were on a panel, you could orient it to the sun without having to move the car.

If you use the flexible amorphous solar panels you can fix them on with an adhesive around the shape of the panel. These are less fragile, don't quite work as well in lower light levels but should be adequate for what you need.

Have a look at this site for some inspiration. I like the idea of the pull out draw (about half way down) that sits between the wheel boxes. Raises the floor level a bit but very useful.

Well, I've now got Masai windows and rear bench seats in now, to get it through the London Low Emission Zone nonsense. As soon as I've got it through, I'll be putting chequer plate in the back along with a drawer for kit between the wheel boxes (a la Justin). I've already managed to have a good kip in my hammock in the back.
