    Android Phone Apps

    Chaps.
I've just got myself a new phone. Previously I had a windows phone but now I've got a samsung which runs on android.
    So.
Naturally, I want to put some apps on it.
Can anyone recommend some good 'outdoorsy' apps?
    Free ones, obviously.

Specifically, I'd like recommendations for the following:
    - star spotting/charts (preferably one of those ones where it tells you what's in front as you move the phone around)
    - tree identification
    - bird identification
    - GPS (not really looking for a driving GPS but one that will work like a Garmin GPS type unit - so I can enter a GPS coordinate and it will allow me to move in on it. The sort of thing you'd need for geocaching)

But if you think there's a killer outdoors app then let me know!

I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be interested in what outdoor apps other members are using so feel free to use this thread for them all.

    Cheers all.

If your phone has a gyro then https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...droid&hl=en_GB

    Plant ID: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ntnet&hl=en_GB

Tree ID (but only 70 trees): https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...trust&hl=en_GB

GPS: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...sfree&hl=en_GB NOTE: This is a free trial version and is limited to storing only 3 waypoints, and 40 track log points. You can use the trial version for as long as you want, but if you like this app, please install the paid version of "Handy GPS" to get an unlimited version with lots more features.

+ 1 for The woodland trust app. And if you've bought an os map in the past couple of years you may have a download to redeem if you get their app.

I like "Grid Reference". It's a super simple app, has no ads or nonsense; it just gets your GPS location and converts it to Grid Reference. It tells you how accurate it is, and how many satellites it has a signal from so you can figure out the accuracy of your location. It'll show the grid reference accurate to 10 figures ("SU 85311 61073"), or as roughly as 2 ("SU 8 6"). (My values modified, I have no idea where this will show up on a map.)

It also has a share button so you can quickly and easily send your location to someone via any number of methods from SMS to storing on a drive, Tweeting, or simply copying to the clipboard.

If anyone else is looking for a free GPS android app that turns your phone into an outdoor GPS unit then have a look at Memory Map.

Here's a free mushroom guide for you:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ushrooms&hl=en

It's not as good as a good book, but it's a useful little guide if you find yourself out and about and stumble across something curious and all you have on you is your phone.
I won't give you the patronising rigmarole about picking mushrooms and guidebooks - you're all big enough and ugly enough to know that by now.
