My mate, Phil(luresalive) made one from an old industrial hacksaw blade, it turned out very well and has held a cracking edge for ages and he has used it a lot.

Yep bicarb to and if they are really bad 24 hours in milton solution works well.

How do you prepare your Birch bark polypore for the extender? Do you just dry it at home or is there a special way to prepare it?
