For me, it's catch and release on the eels (unless they have swallowed the hook right down). They're having a hard time at the moment and numbers are in rapid decline.
They taste pretty good.
Ah, nearly forgot. A silk bag liner can make all the difference too.
Start with as little as possible - Just wear your base shirt and keep a spare top inside the bag in case you get cold, that way it's already warm and you don't have to get out of the bag to fetch it...
First thing that came to mind was some sort of mole. Can't really tell what it is, is it arachnid, insect, bird, mammal or what?
I won't eat them because there's usually cider in my system. When they start to turn, you can use the ink as .......ummm....... ink! It stains pretty well.

Looking at the wind direction from the grass, it may have your scent but just can't pinpoint where it's coming from.
I've done it abroad but never tried fishing for squid in this country. You might have to let on a bit more if you don't mind divulging please? Locations/time of year?
