Picked up an October copy of "AIR Gunner" magazine,yesterday!and in it is a method of curing hides and skins with washing up liquid!
Discovered by a guy called John Bezzard,Whilst attempting to clean some soild Kids skins.
It runs to 3pages,with many pictures.But in a nut shell""
Place skins in a bucket of tepid water,(not hot or it will shrivel the skin side)containing a liberal dose of Fairy liquid,stir the skins for 5minutes.
After 24hrs,remove from bucket,rinse in tepid water, n drape over fence,bush etc to Partially dry.
Then stretch n pin to a pallet or frame so both sides get aired.
For 7 days apply a liberal dose of Fairy liquid to the skins n rub in with a damp sponge.
On days 8 to 10,aplly slightly less FLrubbed around with a wet sponge.Next rub the skin with an abrasive stone,ie,a pumice stone.strarting in the middle n working out to the edges,for around 20 mins.if it becomes dry,wet with sponge.
On the 10th day after your last treatment,leave the skin on board until Dry,then remove from the board,n trim of the edges which will be hard.as the nails don't allow you to get to the edge.Comb the hair.
This method produces very soft,supple pelts.
Store pelts,by rolling in newspaper,with the hair on the outside.

They guy who "invented"this method uses the pelts to make practical items...on the lines of Capt Scotts,clothing,Sleeping bags.used on their expedition to the south pole.
