View Full Version : The Best Homemade Budget Stove?

I've made penny stoves, wood burning stoves from tin cans, bake bean tins, all sorts of random design idea's....

Just want to see what people think is their best "budget" cooking example?

I would say mine was, a tinned can of smart price potatoes, (obviously the empty can ;) ) then, made a door for putting the wood in,

drilled a couple of holes for some old tent pegs to make a stand for other pots to sit on,

used old bake bean cans to cook on the top, as the diameter was slightly smaller than the potato can,

unfortunately, I don't have any pictures, but you get the idea...

I like em all, addicted to building them.find myself looking at tins n bottle sizes n shapes, rather than whats in them.lol.
Think the Best stove Ive made is the Double coil spirit stove,(ie,coil of 8mm copper pipe, coiled, fitted into a jar lid.)Love the roar it makes, very hot flame, yet economical.

I don't mind which sort of stove, but for me they need to be short and wide,
I've had a couple of home made wood gas stoves which function perfectly, but they are a bit unstable,
I will eat almost anything preferably without leaves and soil...lol

1173211731This is one of my favorites[[/ATTACH]117271172811730 Its like a kelly kettle, the woodburner fits into the SS billy and my fire kit goes inside the burner along wth the trivet and a few other bits, the kettle is a 500ml beer can. Take the top part off and put the trivet on to use the billy can or some other pan, all in all it works very well, its light but a bit tall

For me the simplest neatest and best looking DIY cook kit is the IKEA hobo stove ...

Use with a nesting Tea/Coffee/Sugar caddy as a cook pot and a few cheap tent pegs ... Bingo!!!

Can team it with your favourite penny , pop can , white box or trangia meths stove makes a windshield too!!!

Shop in my favourite outlet stores like Sally Army , Pilgrims Hospice , Age Concern , you get the idea ,

and you can find one as cheap as chips , try the boot fairs and its even cheaper !!!

True you won't get any spuds , carrots or dog food but isn't the shiney stainless steel worth it ?!?!

Won't bother posting a pic ... there are loads of really good examples on the site already ...

Use the search engine top right corner ...

Some chap made a really good example for his wife only a few weeks ago !!!

Cheers Whistle

I've heard a lot about these IKEA hobo stoves, I am yet to find the correct pieces in IKEA however, now I live in New Zealand, that's gone out the window!

11843I picked up an ikea container a couple of years ago but still has screwdrivers and tat on my bench in the garage, prob is since I picked up a Swedish twig burning volcano type stove the desire has wained to get of my bum and do something (way to much other stuff to do)

Time constraints, the scourge of the working bushcrafter. Seriously I've got so many plans, yet no time to do it in lol. More to the point it's not hard or expensive to make a woodgas stove, but if you want a stove yesterday it's easy and cheap to make a Jumbo dog meat can hobo stove.

I made a stove from an empty food tin in Italy, used it while there for brews mainly, then dropped it in a bin before returning to the airport, ideal

We have a blog featuring some nice examples here: https://www.thebushcraftcave.com/top-5-diy-hobo-stove-designs-how-to-create-your-own/

Personal fav. is using a stainless steel cutlery drainer and bent tent pegs. They're brilliant and great fun to build.

Hi Woody nice job on the Ikea Hobo though personally I prefer it without the door ...

I find it is too easy for fuel to fall out and cause a mess !!!

Instead I have made a support system from stainless steel based on the SEIGE X-STOVE system...

You have to use smaller ( read shorter ) bits of wood and I load them with large forceps

( bought at the boot fair tool stand ) but the pan support gives enough clearance to top load

under a pan or kettle ... watch the video you'll see what I mean ...

Wow! Are you serious??? It just gets better and better....
Folks just think of everything... I'm going to have to invest in that system soon... I mean toasters and everything?! [emoji122]
Yep , that is pretty cool.
Thank you for sharing that!
Ps- you made yours because it was difficult to buy these in the UK ? Or through choice?
Meaning if they don't sell them here, is there something similar here on this side of the pond?
Again, thanks for sharing that!!![emoji2]

Hi Woody I made mine 'cause I didn't think they had made it across the water yet ...

and 'cause I'm a cheapskate LOL !!! but the Idea looked so good I had to try it ...

I made mine from a stainless steel tray ...

( 50p from the local Pilgrims Hospice Charity shop )

and sliced it up with the Dremel ...

I made the supports to be specific for the Ikea Hobo for ease of making and

putting the supports together ... but you could easily add extra lugs as in the

Siege X for greater flexibility !!!

Never got as far as making the toasters though ... don't really enjoy wood smoke flavour !!!

Big advantages are Stability stability and stability !!!

Increases through draft of the stove and really minimises ground heat strike ...

I just use a small foil pie dish to catch the hot ashes as they fall out ... brilliant ... LNT !!!

Be interesting to see how long it takes to cross the water

but I couldn't be bothered trying to buy from USA LOL !!!

STOP PRESS ... available from Bushcraft store £24.95 but are out of stock at mo!!!

Haha! Another brilliant idea, the foil pie dish to catch the ashes...[emoji106]
They nest together and fit nicely within the stove in transport I guess...
And it can sit under it (or inside it) whilst in use , like you said , Leave No Trace.
Brilliant.[emoji106] [emoji106] [emoji106] [emoji106]
Will look into building a similar system like yourself ... I do like a challenge.
I'll let you know how I got on...

Again thanks for the tips! [emoji122] [emoji122] [emoji122]

PS.-

Whilst on subject, is there a favourite, when it comes to portable/backpack fire pit/tray/?
I'm not sure what would be the best choice in something that allow us to have a fire but at the same time protect the grass/ground, but that folds away small and light???
Loads of firebox things and other pull out BBQ type things on Amazon and the likes but, not quite small enough for backpack.
Any ideas Sir?
Thanks in advance...[emoji106] [emoji106] [emoji106] [emoji106]

BIG foil pie dish???
[emoji19] [emoji57] [emoji4]

Ha ha ha !!! Naaah just a small 6 inch dish but carefully flattened round the edges

so I guess it's about 7 - 8 inches diameter but when folded up it fits in the cook kit ...

They don't last for ever ... folding and unfolding sees to that ... but ezy to get another!!!

As far as folding BBQ's goes I have tried a few , the best a Gelert Folding BBQ in silver ...

folds down pretty small but its too heavy for backpacking ... ok for the beach ,

or car camping ...have to take care though ,

hot coals and ash fall from the breather vent holes ...

messy needs a real BIG pie dish LOL !!!

linky ... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gelert-BBQ008710-Foldable-Barbeque-Silver/dp/B006OU30I4?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0

or I've got a large stainless meat dish with a fitting rack from a grill pan

(useful bits bought down the boot fair cheap cheap cheap !!! )...

works like a reusable disposable bbq .... what an oxymoron !!! ...

or failing that I use disposables , great for beach or boat ...

light easy to carry and just stick it in the nearest bin when you're finished ...

there is the fry bentos pie dishes which are good and a couple of bolts through the base make a good fire pan, or another is a round steamer thing which cost me 99p the I used a foil pie dish to collecty the ash below it to catch all the ash (the steamer has pins in the bottom which I sometime just place the foil pie dish on or sometimes if not fully flat may pierce the foil tray to get a stable base) and then put in in a carrier bag when fished with to leave no trace.

here is the steame (http://www.wilko.com/kitchen-gadgets-and-utensils/wilko-vegetable-steamer-stainless-steel/invt/0318176)r I use but it now has gone up in price by a fair bit but other supermarkets normally have it.

I've tinkered with a few designs over the years as others have said the exercise in itself is absorbing. My main form of cooking is with an Esbit alcohol stove and the wood burning role is secondary. Using the Alcohol Stove the set up acts as a windshield and pot stand.
