Hi guys, have had this piece of wood in the shed for about 18 months or more. It was from our greengage tree. It is about 2 inches or just under in diameter. Is this ok to carve, and if so, suggestions please as what to attempt for my first effort.
Thanks Andy

:jumping-joy:That's a stick, for you'r first go at carving I think you need somthing a bit thicker. Then go onto utube and watch wood carving vides, also have you got the right tools, I made mine when I started last year.11021110221102311024

You may find it tough going to carve, with it being seasoned for 18 months. Normally best to carve an item from green (fresh) woods.
Make sure you don't slip, as you'll be applying quite a bit of force.

Good luck with your project T^

So how did some of this carving turnout? How did you find that wee stick to carve up?

hi Andy, im new here too but i thought i would offer something. as mentioned after 18 months in the shed, its going to be a little tough! bit of an odd shape too so unless it has any sentimental value, bin it. :) lots of new carvers first project is a spoon of some sort, a simple object but valuable experience gained in knife or tool control. if you like spoon carving there are many excellent examples on the web to aspire to. but just about anything has been carved, chipped or whittled from wood, just find a subject your comfortable with and make sure whatever you use is sharp! a kevlar or good thick hide glove will come in handy too, i found that out when i started. :)
