Hey Guys, I am interested in purchasing an Opinel #8 for every day carry, as suggested by Martin. I was wondering what steel would be better stainless or carbon?

Hi James,

We had a thread a while ago about the merits of each type:

http://www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?190-Stainless-or-Carbon-Mora

Personally, I've got both types. I do a lot of diving and need stainless for that but carbon for bushcraft and hunting.

As for patination, I soaked my No. 9 Carbone in malt vinegar and ended up with a flawless black blade (I can send a pic if you want).

Hope this helps

Steve

I have the #8 stainless, which I got first, and then got both the #6 and #8 carbon, stainless one needs work on the edge as it tends to be rought from ones I saw, and the carbon are really sharp out of the box and easy to make razor sharp, but discolour really easily. Is funny, was disappointed with the stainless when I got it, then got the carbon ones and loved them, but seeing the rate of discolouration, both ended up in my backpack and the past month the stainless one has been in my pocket. Go figure!

I have a No 8 stainless and a No 9 carbon, I'll take the 8 out if i go fishing, and the 9 for camping/hunting. I sharpen both with a DC3 stone. For EDC i have a No7 stainless.
