I felt like steak tonight so I went on a little forage to find either some brackets, puffballs or shaggy ink caps but I came across these and i'm not really sure what I have here. if it is lanatus roger phillips lists it as edibility unknown. this is the first bolete I have seen out of the autumn season

whats your thoughts?

It's a Xerocomus. Probably X. submentosus (Suede Bolete).

Loads of people posting interesting fungi early in the season. I'm off to Scotland next week, and right now I'm feeling optimistic!!!

Waaaay too early for shaggy inkcaps, BTW. They don't turn up until there is a proper chill in the air.

funny I thought it was to early for bolete's, and yet in the rains last summer my main find was ink caps, I love the taste and the race to get them on the plate before they turn, actually a challenge if you are a sales rep you have to pick them in the afternoon.

thanks for the I D, the wiki says that if you put ammonium hydroxide on the cap it will turn mahogany red, have you ever done anything like this before???

Me too fella. I've got several hot spots in forests that I return to every couple of years. We're heading up on Monday morning.

I found my first bolete (another Xerocomus) this year at the start of June. Lots of boletes turn up by August.

No. I don't use chemicals or microscopy.
