View Full Version : Your choice of pillow for a hammock?
Just looking for some idea of what type you're all using for a pillow in hammock as I am new to hammocking. I currently have a Exped air pillow which is awesome as it packs down to nothing and is really comfortable however I have only used it in a tent but not sure if it would be suitable or not in hammock environment, too wide and may slip about maybe?
Exped also do a neck pillow so wondering if this may be a better choice as it would go round neck and maybe give better support.
So just looking for some advice/recommendations/preferences from experienced hammockers on which they use/prefer and why? Either way I think I may get the neck pillow and take both and see which I prefer but still curious as to other peoples prefs.
......Or do you use clothing/bag etc or not use a pillow?
Adam.

Never found I needed a pillow in my hammock Adz. If your 'asym' laying, the fabric at the head side comes up to make a comfy place for your head as is.

Same as said above, never used a pillow in a hammock, and never felt the need. I do know a couple people that do use them though, and their pillow of choice is the snugpak softie. Seems really thin to me, so not sure how much difference it would make. Not tried it myself, so couldn't really recommend it, or others.

Don't take a pillow myself. As I use my sleeping bag opened up as a quilt, the hood part sometimes gets pulled around and tucked under my head. Occasionally if the old aches are getting to me then my down coat may get used but generally its comfy enough without.
Thanks for the replies guys. Looks pretty much like I wont need it in the hammock then if nobody else bothers/thinks its necessary. I'll probably take it with me to the meet still though to try out and if not needed one of the other lads on ground can use it over weekend if they want.
Thnx again chaps :)

Those exped pillows are nice looking, quite fancy one for tent camping. The old drybag with a jumper works fine but a little luxury never hurt anyone ;).

Indeed, I love anything that does the job well and also packs down really small. Its like a NeoAir for your head, trick is to not overfill but to get air amount just right :D

Rolled up poncho liner works well. I use a basha set up as a bridge hammock, is flatter and tighter, so I can sleep on my side well, and a pillow is needed.

I use a rolled up fleece/other clothing. If it slips away during the night I don't really miss it so it can't be essential for me.

When you start hammocking mate you will realise..
A. you don't need a pillow
B. if you try to use a pillow, you will lose sleep trying to find where it is.

ADz,
I must be the odd one out, I use a small Vango Pillow, silky one side and velvety the other, I have it in the hood of my sleeping bag which stops it moving around. Packs down to about 6" x 3" and could be compressed much more
Mainly used in winter as extra insulation, tend not to use it much in summer but I do find it more comfortable when when I use it, that's only my opinion

Thnx bud. I'm going to be taking my pillow and maybe buy the exped neck pillow aswell, that way I can see which I prefer, ie none/air pillow/neck pillow, But its good to hear other peoples opinions/recommendations aswell :)

Hi Adz, I too use a pillow. One of these . http://www.gelert.com/products/comfort_fleece_pillow. Is nice and light and rolls up tight.
It's all down to personal preference and the position you sleep in. I find it makes all the difference.

I also use rolled up clothing - just a shirt works well enough for me.

I use a trek mates deluxe pillow. Works well and is very comfy!!
Can't see any reason why the pillow you have won't work fine mate!!

I always use a pillow. I have an Exped air pillow and it's great. I find it just the right size to fit in the hammock and when you get it inflated right it doesn't move around. Like you said, it packs down to nothing and it weighs virtually nothing so why not take it?

I use the side wall of the hammock which i find folds over nicely to make a wee shelf i can stick my head on. But i lie on my side so i dont know if thatll work lying on your back or not

I use an inflatable pillow. A cheapo one. I inflate it 70% and put it in the hood of my sleeping bag. Never moves and is very comfortable. Only you can decide weather you need one or not mate.

I picked it up in a charity shop for a quid a while back. It is very comfy.

US issue poncho liner/woobie/ranger blanket, works great, soft and squishy, and can pull part of it over your head to block out the evil sunshine the next morning while you slowly wake.

Trek mates deluxe for me too. I boost the height with a dry bag of clothes too, mainly due to a week clavicle which gives my shoulders jip if I don't.

I always use a pillow in my hammock, I just have one of those cheap £5 hi gear ones. Just like a little extra comfort, Im not keen on the feel of the sleeping bag on my bold head :o
i cram a jumper into the stuff sack of me sleeping bag and use that, although sometimes i wake up with webbing patterns in my face
