View Full Version : SURVIVAL - An acronym that will help you stay alive.

Recently opened my youtube channel again and decided to start making bushcraft/survival type videos.

My camera is playing up so I decided to do a simple narration and powerpoint for today.

I could not get my mic to stop getting background noise and I apologize for my terrible lisp (due to my braces, had it for a while now).

Thank you both kindly!

Unfortunately I have received less than nice messages elsewhere.

I'm trying, that's all that counts surely? I'm not the most confident person in the world...

Yeah, that was my thought process. Not sure whether I actually failed though. I will make better quality videos soon as the camera is being fixed.

I am familiar with STOP, first remember seeing it in the SAS Survival Guide...

Andy, if you currently feel like you are not the most confident person in the world, putting yourself out there on YouTube, may actually make you feel worse.

Then again, the negative comments you are receiving elsewhere may provoke a FU response in you, upon which you can build confidence, as you will care less what other people think of you.

The question you need to ask yourself is, are you really ready for whatever responses you might receive?

As you are getting at in your video, there is no need to rush and jump in feet first, take your time, prepare yourself and act when you are ready.

But remember, like Wayne has said, it is better to try and risk failure, than not to try at all.

Good luck fella,

Atb.

Colin

Colin, I am using youtube to get myself more comfortable in front of a mic/camera.

I'm fine with people, I am one of the most talkative people in my friendship group.

I have thick skin, they can say what they want, it's just nice to know people appreciate you trying.

Thanks for the advice,

Andy

Yup I was the 11,000 man on the balcony at Princess Gate, just behind John Mac ;)

I use it in relation to teaching Mountain First Aid where rushing into a situation can have catasrophic results for rescuers/responders

I've been to Hereford before and everyone said they were the second man at the seige! ;)

Mountain Rescue is under appriciated by the wider public. We have a collection here for the one closest to us and I always donate when I can.

Both you and Colin talk sense and I appreciate the feedback from both of you!

At work whenever we get a serious job, be it cardiac arrest or rtc or whatever, whenever you get a pause you allways stop and go back and review the basics.... CABCDEFG if your not doing anything..... review and see if there is something you should be doing.

Tried to watch your vid Andy but it says it has been removed.
Dont worry about negative comments bro, they are written by idiots with too much time on their hands..delete them if they bother you. Remember you are the one that has got of "YOUR" bottom to go out side and do something constructive while these silly "TROLLS" sit in their bedrooms 24/7 desperately writing rubbish on youtube vids hoping someone will pay attention to them.

If making bushcraft vids makes "YOU" happy..make them, some one in the bushcraft fraternity will always be interested in how other guys are doing things.:rock-on:

Thanks for the advice guys, it does help.

I removed the video not long ago as I am not happy with it and I think waiting a little while and trying to improve it would help.

I do intend to get videos up sometime in the future, I don't want fame or ad money like alot of yt people do, just want to show others how I go about my own personal path of bushcraft.

Once again, I appreciate the kind words guys and bad comments won't stop me from doing what I love. I've been doing this as long as I can remember since I was a small child and I will not be disheartened by others. I just felt more susceptible regarding videos due to keyboard warriors intent on making me feel bad. It won't stop my efforts in bushcraft but does make more weary of YouTube and trolls.

Once again, thanks everyone and if any of you ever come down my way then be sure to give me a shout.

All the best,

Andy

I've been trained to deal with the media and received buckets of abuse (admittedly the praise outweighed it) from people I called colleagues for appearing on TV or Radio...thats what put me off

But why? Are they jealous? Surely having someone like yourself, knowledgeable and experienced is a benefit to the community as you are giving out proper and decent advice.

The first time I tried a video (before the OP one) I was heckled and branded many awful things. I am better able to take this now thanks to everyone on this thread, but I can't understand why people feel the need to do it. I reckon they would act differently offline compared to when they are able to hide behind a username.

Andy, Shame that the pressure forced you to take it down. I've watched a few YouTube videos and while some have been less helpful I cannot think of many that have been so dire that I don't get either a different view I hadn't considered or an example of how not to do something or why you should do it a certain way.

I've skulked around on this forum for a while and find that its smaller but more friendly than other forums, the comments you received seem to support it.

Stick with it, your way is right for you and any tosser can hide behind their mouse and criticise, never going further a field than their local McD! I came to the conclusion that they want to do something to be noticed and the easiest way is to damage, effectively vandals. Its hard but ignore them and paddle your own canoe!

Good luck.

Jules

BY the way what was your acronym? I'm a Scout Leader and they're always useful to embed them in teen age minds!

BY the way what was your acronym? I'm a Scout Leader and they're always useful to embed them in teen age minds!

Hi Jules, thank you for the kind words.

NB is by far my favourite forum though I rarely post.

I will probably remake the video and edit it at some point in the future.

Here is the acronym though, hope it is of use to you...

S - Size up the situation
U - Undue Haste makes waste
R - Remember where you are
V - Vanquish fear and panic
I - Improvise
V - Value living
A - Act like the natives
L - Live by your wits

In a little detail, firstly sizing up the situation by looking for any injuries you may have and if you are in a group whether others are injured. This is also the time to do an equipment check and know what you have available to you. Secondly, you must remember to remain calm and to take time to make decisions - rushing will severely diminish your capability to make the right or rational decisions to aid in your situation. It is important that there is a confident and competent leader if you are in a group, but at the same time, all members are allowed to have a say and suggest ideas. Thirdly, you must consider your location and take into account whether this will have an effect on your situation. This is particularly true if you either happen to be in an area that is hard for search and rescue to be conducted or if you personally or if a member of your group (if you are in one) has an injury that limits mobility as this may mean they cannot traverse terrain. This is also the time if you have a map to try and pinpoint your location and if you get it and communication is possible then try to relay it to rescue teams. The next point is to ensure you eliminate any fear or anxiety you have again, if you are in a group keep an eye on others if they show signs of either two. After this has been ensured, you should make an attempt to improvise by knowing what you have and what you need but don't have. For the latter, try to find natural alternatives. Remember murphy's rule of combat #7 - if it looks stupid but it works, then it isn't stupid. Next, you should strive to keep yourself positively motivated and to value life. Losing morale will only worsen your situation. If you are in a group then ensure everyones spirits are kept high. After this you should try to act like the natives, meaning looking for natural materials to aid you and having respect for all point things, only taking what you need from around you. Finally, you must remember to live by your wits, listening both to your brain and your gut, taking risks only when they will significantly aid your survival or that of your group (if you are in one).

The paragraph above is just more detailed breakdown of the acronym. I thought it would benefit you if I added it though.

If you need anything else then please message me, I am always happy to help!

Take care,

Andy
