1 Week Cooking Set for 2/3 People

Hi Guys / Girls,

I've recently been experimenting with what to carry and cook with for a small group and for a week plus. Let's just assume straight off that I don't do super-lightweight backpacking. :)

For my usual one man week-long cook set (along with my hobo stove) I carried a 6" SS tin which doubled as a pan/fry pan and plate combo (incl. the lid) and carried all my condiments and Millbank bag:

...packed weight with all goodies +/- 800g

But on a recent trip to Tooting (great curries!), I picked up something IMHO which I find more useful. Works out slightly heavier (900g):

This set up would work well for 2 or even 3 people as there's now another 2 SS pans/bowls and a lid/plate. It holds all the stuff of the previous tin and gives much more flexibility. This tine set up cost £6.99 so get in touch if you want me to put you in touch/arrange a group buy.

For a 2+ man camp this arrangement would be ideal as there's plenty of cooking and eating receptacles and hold all the condiments and sauce materials.

For the record, here's what's in the Nalgene bottles:

1 x Garlic granules
1 x Mixed herbs
1 x 'Vegeta' vegetable salt - which I use for all salting
1 x Chicken stock granules
1 x Mixed herbs (own recipe!)
1 x Curry powder (own recipe too!)
1 x lrg Vegetable oil (not olive as it burns to easily at high - think fire - temperature)

In the non-Nalgene:

Box of Oxo cubes
3 x Soy sauce sachets

...there's still a bit of room for your own choices such as ketchup/mustard etc.

I reckon this is a good and portable setup for 2-3 people as there's plent of eating receptacles and I like cooking 'tapas' style (one dish at a time to be enjoyed sloooowly).

Hi Paul,

Empty weight of the SS 'Indian Lunchbox' is 380 grammes. It's not super-light by any means, but if you consider you're getting 2 x pans/bowls and a lid to eat out of, it's quite useful and it all locks together.

You can probably see the deerskin in the picture. I'm about to make bags for this set and the hobo stove. I'm just waiting for my finger to heal so I can sew as I sliced right through the top of it whilst washing up. That's sharp knives for you!

Looks like a great set. The Indian Luncbox looks like a really nice piece of kit, I would definitely be up for a group buy. Is the handle on the lid foldable?

I really enjoy putting kits together like that and testing different combos. I like the concept of having a versatile kit, that can be adapted by adding or removing pieces, depending on the situation.

Yes, the handle folds flat and the holding clips are very strong too. I also bought a mini version of the 'Indian Lunchbox' for a one-man system. Here's the two together (with the hobo) to show sizes:

The 'mini' lunchbox has three pots/bowls and weighs 328 grammes (empty).

Well, I'll look into the logistics of getting some sent but in the meantime do an ebay search for 'tiffin box' and you might find some there. Let us know how you get on and if you have no luck, I'll pop to the shop and see if I can get a bulk discount.

Hey Steve, the weigh of the Indian lunch boxes are not at all bad considering they look very sturdy, i'm impressed. I'm not a gram weenie by any means but kit weight does have a habit of creeping up on you so...!

I do really like the smaller one and as they can hold all of the bits and bobs, they are not bulky since the 'bits and bobs' have to go somewhere in a pack anyway.

Great buy I'd say.

Love the deer skin by the way, not cheap i'm guessing ?

Old addage Steve, if you trust a knife fully while handling it, it won't cut you, if anything it'll just give you a warning by nicking dead skin. Noticed this NUMEROUS times over the years, treat a blade with respect and it'll respect you in return.

Height 13.5 cm X 11.5 cm Width

Looks almost identical to Steve's one.

This is where I bought it. There are a few on ebay, just have a search for Tiffin Tin or Tiffin pot etc.

I'm normally very good with knives Mike. this one was 'lurking' the wrong way up at the bottom of the washing up bowl! Had to get a tetanus shot as the dishwater would've gotten into the cut. ;)
