That's one that keeps coming up! Uk hammocks now do it on their DIY page but it's not cheap. I was looking at going to Dunelm mill and buying some down cushions to split open.

Under blanket fish? You could have yourself a little money maker here If you found a supplier cheap enough. I know I'd certainly have one off of you mate T^

Duck down does not perform as well as the goose but some of the big names in outdoor wear use it in their garments so it can't be that bad. I would be very interested in your find as I have been trying to find someone for bleedin ages so that I can get this down UQ done for a reasonable price.

well ime gonna visit the guy next week and take a look at what he has got. yes its for an under quilt, using a stuffing instead of a duvet would be so simple to make,i recon i could do one in 2 hours.

btw the cheapest eider duck down i could find was £1300 per kg!

I have a bookmark on my laptop, I'll post the link when I get home but if I remember correctly... I think it's (goose down definitely) 750fp and 320g of fill per cushion for £25. could be wrong though!

Could you not get second hand quilts and sterilise the feathers out of them for use, just a thought.

The problem with this is that they are often feathers as opposed to the down which is lighter, softer and warmer. Feathers themselves don't perform too well when it comes to keeping us warm so you need to use quite a lot off them thereby compensating for the inefficiency. That then defeats the object of a lightweight and low bulk down quilt. Of course down versions are available but difficult to obtain.

Oh I see but in some of the charity shops I sometimes see down quilts for sale as dog blankets

Keep your eyes peeled for old pattern 58 sleeping bags ;) I believe they use goose down, rather than duck.

I have a bookmark on my laptop
Found it HERE (http://www.thehouseofemily.co.uk/product.asp?strParents=&CAT_ID=333&P_ID=468) its 650fp not 750fp but its 100% hungarian goose down, £24.50 for 320g of down in a cushion or £85 for 4 (1280g). Works out at £66.41 per kg or £76.56 per kg if you buy 1.

I thought that Fish's idea was a great one and Mr Punch's an even better one instead of paying a fortune on new down. I will be buying a hammock and tarp for my boy and me next year so I thought it would be a good idea to try Freecycle for free quilts and pillows containing the feathers or down and making one myself.

I'm thinking that I could take out the contents, stick it in a pillow case and wash it on a cool setting before naturally drying them. Maybe I could then take out the contents of an old quilt, cut it to shape and then fill and sew it up.

This morning I have already been offered a single down quilt from a kind lady on Freecycle, so once picked up it will be laundered as described and put away until next year when I have enough filling.

Come on mate, I bet your expecting a crude answer to that one ;).

Considering it is pre watershed I will give the clean answer

Seeing as though it comes from somebody I don't know, how many times may body fluids have seeped into the said quilt, staining and giving the quilt a general grubby dirty appearance. Said quilt is also in her loft, so the loft in question might contain old remnants of asbestos insulation which will scratch the hell out of me. Also, before I met the missus many moons ago, I would gladly sleep in a bed with a grubby quilt and cover but said missus now changes the bed weekly enabling me to snooze away while sniffing away at a quilt that smells of Daz, and on the rare occasion gallons of olbas oil when she has a sniffle.

The End !!

PS I wonder what it does smell like !!
