Budget Millbank filter.

Howdo,

Not wanting to spend a small fortune for one of these, decided to look about to find if anyone had made their own, and what with..

I was intending to use haulage tarp canvas, after a talk with another member, but was let down by another friend who said they had some spare, so I hunted the net and bought a 2000mm x 400mm roll of artist canvas from the famous auction site for a few pound.

Washed it, and it has shrunk, but expected it, so now on the line drying, ready for turning into a filter...

I know it will still need a boilup before using, but it means I can collect water while on the roam without having to carry x ammount of water in my pack.

Just hope now I don't make a mess with the sewing machine!. :)

Hi SimonB,
years back, where I worked we used JUTE waggon sheets on tipper trucks. These were coarser than the ordinary tarps used in general haulage and were not waterproof/treated. If some of these old sheets were still lying about in a haulage yard near you, the owner may give them to you for free. Just a thought Buddy.

Go for it mate... I pinched it off someone anyway !!! LOL :)

And I won't be using it all, though I am thinking of double skinning it....

may i sugest you just adapt a army surplus kit holdal the old canvas ones,my mate did it and it filters out all particulates.

They do straws and larger filters which render the water safe to drink straight away,
I have used the straw type for a couple of years and recently bought a 3 in 1 inline filter, attached to a lemonade bottle, you can use it like a camel bak, Drank from a rank smelling canal in derbyshire when I was caught out without water, it was good.
worth a look even if you are not interested in buying one.

could you use the legs of an old pair of jeans to make a millbank style filter, especially if double-skinning it, or is the denim too coarse to be an effective filter? What about using calico and denim?
