Meths Prices - Methylated Spirits [Archive]

Where do you buy yours? I know prices can vary a lot so I am trying to help people by informing them of cheaper places to get it.

Today resnikov went shopping for some and found a 500ml bottle for £4! And rightly so he didn't pay that much.

I get my Meths from Trago Mills, 2 Litres for about £3.39, a much better price! Unfortunately Trago is only throughout the SW, UK, but do you have any tales of outrageous prices or know where's best to get a deal?

Anyone bought in bulk? industrial?

I needed some quickly and paid £2.99 at my local store. When i checked arround they were all about the same. Tesco, Co-op and Morrisons are all arround the £3 mark. Wilko was £3.38. Next time i am in Newton Abbott I will visit Trago.

Is there anything else that can be used in spirit burners? or is it just meths. I will have a look for methanol and try it in the garden first lol.

That's still almost double Trago Mill's! They've got an impressive price haven't they.

... Methanol is apparently far better in a stove, I've not tried any yet but it's also cheaper than methylated spirits...
Interesting, I will have a look into that. ;)

Sorry I made a mistake (& have corrected my initial post); Trago's price is £3.39 for 2L, still the best price so far.

Trago = £1.69 per litre
Mole Valley Farmers = £1.98 per litre (estimate)

I but meths locally (S.Wales) in Wilkinsons for around £3.1 per 500ml. Focus DIY do it for £2.99.

Go Outdoors sell it for £2.25 for 500ml.

Trago is dam cheap...

I just went to Trago's website to see if they have an on-line store. They don't, but they are opening a store in Merthyr Tydfil so i can pick up some meths on my next fishing trip.

You think that's bad? I was quoted £4.99 for 500ml bottle of meths locally and ended up buying small of wino vodka cheaper! :)

This is a Quote from their website:

Trago has planning consent to construct a 150,000 square foot Regional Superstore with associated warehousing and unloading facilities together with customer parking for 2,200 cars. Furthermore, there is permission for a family Leisure Park, Petrol Station and Restaurant.

Trago will appoint a main contractor imminently and main construction work will commence in Spring 2011.

I am going to Jamaica Inn with my wife in Feb so I can pop to Trago in Liskeard and stock up.

...probably because it's a liquid (and flammable), so needs proper packing. Probably best to collect really, if available locally.

Ive just been to buy some meths from Kings my local DIY shop £3 for 500ml, £7.50 for 2ltr and £10.99 for 5ltr i miss Trago prices

£3.50 a litre here but cant buy locally in 5 litre containers. 500ml only at £1.75 - this includes local hardware stores etc. Unless you know different in Lincs.

I usually pick up a 5L tub from the local Mica Hardware store for around £13, it's not as cheap as Trago though :( Camping stores and the big shops like B&Q are a rip off, it's worth mooching about in smaller DIY shops and see what's about.

Methanol is apparently far better in a stove, I've not tried any yet but it's also cheaper than methylated spirits.

PLEASE DO NOT TRY METHANOL IN A TRANGIA!!!!!

I tried it, and ethanol and acetone (not mixed together)

All 3 give a cold HUGE flame that you can't put out with a MASSIVE amount of soot. If you want to see a trangia flame thrower try it but it's no good for cooking trust me.

Here in Norway we pay 2,25£ a litre if we buy a 4 litre bottle of the stuff we use here. It's called "rødsprit", directly translated to English it means red alcohol, taking it's name from it's color.
But here it is Denatured alcohol not methylated... anyway, good to see that at least one thing is not double or tripple price to other countries...

I've struggled to find meths in Otley (yes, I'm from Lizzie Armitstead's hometown). Our local camping shop has had trouble stocking it recently, the garage keeps selling out, and I ended up getting some for my mKettle/Firefelt from the local diy shop £2.99 for 750ml.

Trago is currently £3.78 for 2L and a bottle of the 500ml variety will set you back £1.58.

I was in Trago Mills last week looking for the two litre bottles but they had none in stock. I still picked up a few 500ml up at £1.29 a bottle though.

I picked up a 750ml bottle for £1 the other day from one of those "everything for a quid" places, also grabbed a set of aluminum billy cans. Didn't need them but they were a quid, would have been a crime not to pick them up.

Sorry to drag up a old thread but just come back from trago myself with 2ltrs of meths for £3.odd which works out less than £12 for 6ltrs now that's good considering average price is around 18 to 25 pound for 5ltrs

A 1 quart container of denatured alcohol cost $7.00 from the local hardware store - it was on a sale at the time, as it normally sells for a little over $8.00. Surprisingly, this was a cheaper buy than what the Amazonian offers.
