It's been too long friends!

I'm really looking forward to it, but you have me down for Sun/Mon. I wish I could stay the Monday but work demands... I'll be arriving on Saturday evening (possibly late afternoon) and leaving on Sunday after lunch. I'll be able to come earlier on the Saturday if the Torridge is in spate again.

I'm up on Dartmoor that weekend, so Saturday is out and a good chunk of Sunday, but I may be able to pop along on my way home, late Sunday afternoon, pull up a chair to camp fire and sneak in a(other) cheeky overnighter :D

I will be picking my children up from Sussex, either the friday evening or saturday morning, so could get you there, but they are down here for a week, so you would need to find a way back to Wiltshire

Its like a sauna in there in the Summer !!.

I have stayed there a few times with my boy and the informal rules are that you can pee in the woods and do anything else in the toilet block. Mr Jones the owner is quite happy if you catch, shoot, hunt or trap rabbits and suchlike for the pot. He is a really nice guy who leaves you alone to enjoy your time there.

I'm not sure what to use.. At the moment, I have nothing that is "small" I have a 2 man tent, with a porch though, so it's not the smallest and best for woods. Anyone got a hammock they want to sell? Or any hammock they can recommend online that isn't too much money?..

It won't be a waste, I have always wanted a hammock, just never had money to get one because something more necessary is always needed. I would love to give hammocking a go for a night, so would Tyler.

My boy and I are trying out sleeping under a tarp for the first time. We are using a cheapy camo one which will be 12' x 15' and if we both enjoy it we will upgrade later on to a lighter, basha type one. Because of the bad back I will also be bringing along the kingsize airbed, the Czech bedrolls, an extra blanket and a chair !!.

What do you all think about using something like these to attatch to the tarp and then maybe making them a little longer by tying on some paracord and then securing the end to the ground with tentpegs.

They don't always hold under pressure.. :S the plastic bit may break off.. hrmm :S haven't used them much though.. so..

I'll be in a 3-man tent. Which is basically just big enough for me and my kit. I swear wherever they make these tents must be the land of little people.

If previous experiences are anything to go by, there'll be people sleeping in all manner of tents, hammocks and chairs. Okay, maybe not the latter, but the great thing about these meets is that people don't judge you by what tent or hammock you use. (Well, at least not to my face! ;))

It's just a great opportunity to get out of signal and play with sharps and fire, learn or teach something, then enjoy a few drinks before we all snore the wildlife away.

I'm always up for a meet Fish and no doubt my boy will be as well. It will be great to try out another area and meet forum members who can't make the Cornwall gathering.

Down here in Camborne, Cornwall mate.

I don't mind travelling a couple of hundred miles if given notice. This just gives SWMBO time to sort her working pattern out and also time for me to stash a little money away for petrol, food, etc, etc. I think my boy would also enjoy the travelling as it would be part of the adventure.

I would also consider picking people up on the way if they have no transport. At a push I could handle another three seeing as though we have an estate car, and if there was too much gear to load, I have a little trailer just over 4 x 3 if needed or tie it on top. This would work both ways as we could share petrol costs and give other bushcrafters down here the option of attending if they have no wheels.

I'm always up for a meet too, but often as now is sadly the case with the upcoming event(s), work gets in the way at the last minute and I am unable to attend.

So it would be a bit pointless of me to say 'Count Me In' at this juncture, but I will certainly register an interest to attend a mid winter meet, follow any discussion with interest, chip in now and then and maybe if the Gods are smiling on me, I might actually attend when whatever is organised rolls around.

Fish for reference, I'm based about six miles south west of Chubbs... in a nicer part of Cornwall:D


Having said that, I hope all who are lucky enough to attend this weekend, have a grand time, remember to take the odd picture (Yes, I know that is a bit rich coming from Mr Iforgottotakemycamerawithme) and share a tale or two with the rest of us.

After not working on Sundays for ages, McDonalds have decided to schedule me work on the Sunday of this event. I have asked for it as paid holiday, as I do have holidays which I am entitled to.

What I am going to do, is pay for the nights camp, then try my best to get down on Sunday, even if I end up leaving work early. But I will get down there!

Just sat there with the missus and seen the weather for the weekend and oooh, theres going to be an Artic Blast hitting the whole country !!. Its not going to be too bad down here but it will be a tad cold during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Because I hate the cold and my boy will be with me I have now changed what we were going to sleep in, from a tarp to a four man tent, a queensize airbed, a quilt underblanket, a Czech Bed Roll and a couple of extra wool blankets !!!!. This may be classed as poshcrafting and I wouldn't want to steal Martin's crown :tongue:, but needs must, and I have a dodgy back !!!.

So when we meet for the first time, don't take the p**s too much !!, blame it on the weather.

Large air-beds are not a good idea in really cold/minus temperatures but the good news is it won't be that cold!

I wouldn't worry about it, The whole idea of the meets are to swap ideas, learn and enjoy company and from what I have seen since joining this forum and watching sites vids they are a very friendly bunch. I'm quite sure there will be various people there who would love to show you the ropes (excuse the pun) :)

There will be a good few tree dwellers about including myself so I don't think that will be a problem. It will probably be better to leave any additional gear until after the meet and you will have a good idea of what will suit you best.

To add to that Jan, I'm laying bets that out of all the tree dwellers there, you won't find two with exactly the same suspension or tarp rigging. I've tried various methods of suspension and tarp setup and have found something I'm happy with, but everyone is different so this event will give you a good idea of the different methods.

Not long now folks, I'm really lookin forward to this weekend :D

I have a DD Travel Hammock and tarp, is there anything else I should have bought?Hi Jan,

I like to keep my setup fairly simple but I would recommend in the long run using karabiners to stop rain (http://www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/shelter/dd-hammock-karabiner-mod-rain-proof-your-hammock.html) running down your hammock webbing in prolonged downpours. Also you will still need a insulation layer underneath you and your sleeping bag, a roll-matt is fine or under-blanket.

The great thing is about these meets is they'll be plenty of different hammock setups and plenty of people willing to show and share (just remember to ask) :)

I'm totally unprepared. I'm away from home and won't have much time to get my kit together on the Friday night before I go canoeing on the Saturday before joining you. So expect me to be the one looking lost and forlorn under a tree somewhere, cursing myself for forgetting the (insert forgotten item here) and wondering whether I should've stayed home and slept because these 12-hour days in the office are draining my batteries something chronic.

Then again, the fresh air and outdoor life might just have me buzzing about with axes and knives, making all manner of things. :D

Oh please let it be the latter; please please please.

Hi Folks,

Not long now till the Natural Bushcraft Autumn Meet! The weather is looking good; a bright sunny weekend but there is a cold snap coming so make sure you wrap-up warm and bring bedding appropriate for single figure temperatures.

If you have not yet paid for your ticket yet then please do so here (http://www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/nbc-oct-2012-meet-payment.html). This is a fairly small event, we have limited it to around 25 people.

If you can, please arrive at Woodland Valley to meet in the car park for 10am on the Saturday, if you can't make that time you will have to make your own way down to the wood. There is a new route marked on the map so please take note of it as there is another group using a different part of the woodland and our old route went through this, I'd like to avoid us bothering them. Both the Car Park and where we will be camping are marked on the Map which is on the Event page here: http://www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/events/naturalbushcraft-autumn-meet-sat-27th-29th-oct-2012.html You can click on the points on the map to get more detail.

There is a communal Rabbit stew on the Saturday evening which everyone is welcome to.

Remember to bring your camping chair and a mug for a brew! Everything else is optional ;)

I was down in the wood this evening, Phil and I setup the chute, man it looks lovely, nice carpet of leaves :o Big thanks to Matt & Phil for lugging gear down there earlier today. I think i am prepared,high calorie and high carb foods for the duration,am taking home cured bacon and chicken fillets too.I just finished making my first under quilt for my hammock,i just hope its warm enough,its made from a 15 tog duvet backed with space blanket type material to reflect body heat all covered in 1.1 O.D ripstop nylon,for top layer i have a Snugpack Antarctica 2 sleeping bag which i will use as a top quilt,and over the top of me will be a DDtarp .
so you guys got any tips on keeping warm or for winter hanging?

Thanks to everybody for making our stay a brilliant experience for our first time out on a forum meet. It was great to put names to faces for the first time and I hope that Brad and I will be made welcome again in the future. Special thanks go to mine hosts Ash, Phil and whoever else organised the event, it really was top class and even though we didn't stay for the whole camp, we both came away having learnt a lot,filling our heads with priceless info which will make our camps much more comfortable in the future.. Thanks also go to Ashley's father who helped me down with our kit strapped to a golf trolly to save my back !!, and to Scott who gave Brad his first shooting lesson and for his impromptu entertainment around the fire after a few lemonade shandies.

With us both very new to this bushcraft lark I in particular was amazed at the workmanship of the handmade knives that were passed around to look at. Every time I was passed a different knife the words wow and amazing came out several times due to the fact that I have never seen homemade knives before with such quality, especially the one made by forum member Bernie out of an old file which you could have shaved with and took the hairs off my arm with the slightest glance.

Now its time to talk about Fish. Well what can I say other than he was one of the most friendly, likeable, knowledgeable and generous guys I have ever met in my life. I spent a while talking to him and wish I had more time to carry on. This guy has a completely different outlook on life compared to me and is bursting at the seams with knowledge, and I should say he has forgot more in life than I have ever learnt. I hope that after our meeting he would consider me a friend for life because he is one hell of a guy and it would be a privilege for him to say so. On a more personal note my boy Brad would also like to thank him for the gift he gave him as we left camp.We had said our goodbyes when Fish called him back and said that he had a little something for him. He reached into his bag and pulled out one of his handmade catapults and placed it in his hands. All the way home Brad talked about nothing but Fish and the catapult and also left him with a big smile and a long lasting impression of 'The Big Man'.

Before I forget, sometime during the night most of the camp were woken by what Ashley described as 'the sound of somebody been attacked by an axe murderer'. Apparently it was that loud that he could hear it even though he was listening to music through his headphones. I don't know much about this because I was asleep, so no doubt others will fill you all in once they get home.

Finally all I want to say is, if you haven't yet been on a Natural Bushcraft meet before, do it, its a great experience and you really do meet some friendly like minded people from all walks of life. Even though Brad was tired, he didn't want to leave camp and when we arrived home he was straight outside in the back garden with his new catapult aiming at cans.

Yes it was pretty cold, but nothing to complain about really... the fire was roaring in the evening and I was toasty snug in my hammock. after this was devoured a game of truth or drink was played by the others,and well can you guess which member has ever tipped a disabled chap out of a wheel chair? lol (answers on a post card!) .If i said that Sunday evening was the best of my life i would be under stating it,we all laughed ,joked and told tales,at times i was near tears with the tales told by former military members who have been through hell and back,and other times i near wet myself at some of the antics this lot have gotten up to.

it was another late night and in the small hours i made my way back to the hammock and enjoyed a warm and comfortable nights sleep in my uk hammocks hammock.During the night it rained like hell ,the drops beating on my dd tarp enough to awaken me,but all the gear stood solid and nothing got wet .
By the morning the sun was out in time for breakfast:

I was intending to canoe the Torridge with friends in the morning and come down in the late afternoon/evening, but then decided that it would be too much. Since I canoe more than I camp out, I cancelled the canoeing. It took me a few hours to drive down, but I remembered the way from the main road and took it easy.

I met Andy and Jo in the car park as they returned for a few things. Just as I was heading down, Will arrived and we walked down together. It's amazing how I'm immediately at ease with like minded people I've never even met before.

After a short stroll into the woods, Ashley came over to great us and I quickly looked about and chose a spot to pitch my tent. Once that was done, I decided a little lunch was in order and warmed up a tin of sausages and beans to have with some bread rolls. Not long after sorting out my grumbling tummy, I was chatting with people and soon started carving a spoon (as you do). When Ashley offered a go at axe throwing I dropped my things like a thief in the act and joined him and a few others to learn the skills of Tomahawk throwing.

I came second in a little competition we had, but regardless of placing, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. We returned to camp and soon after that we were invited to fillet a few pigeon for the stew. Always keen to get stuck in, I signed up and was plucking feathers and skinning breasts before filleting the breasts cleanly from the carcase. Not unlike chicken in shape, but a much deeper red - more like a good steak. I was stoked at this point. Not even a whole day in camp and already I'd learnt two things I had not expected to learn. Frankly, I expected to just sit about chatting, whittling, eating and drinking.

I returned to my spoon carving and once finished, decided I'd carve a spatula as well. They're far easier, quicker, and almost as useful. It really should be what people carve before they carve spoons.

All day there was good conversation with good people, sharing stories and jokes well into the night. We saw various things people had made, showed our efforts and were given advice and encouragement. Unusual for a "bushcrafty" meet, there was music (which I thoroughly enjoyed). It was like a relaxed party with old friends.

There are few times when I get to relax and I can't rush back home to do this or that. I was completely chilled out.

The night was cold, and my tent is very thin, but I was in a down sleeping bag inside my larger sleeping bag. I was toasty. :D

Sadly, after coffee and bacon in the morning, I beat a hasty retreat to spend the rest of the day with my wife and children before the weekend would be over.

What a chilled out weekend! I have not come home so relaxed in a very long time. Thanks folks for such a good meet, as is often the case it was good to see familiar faces again but also see folks for the first time, after all its the company that make an event what it is. One person that will stay in my mind for a long time to come will be the great man himself, fish. Quite honestly this is one person that you really want around a campfire as he often had us in stitches, thanks big man - you are a legend!

I would like to give my thanks to the chefs for the best rabbit and pigeon stew and to all that helped to organise the event. And thanks to those that attended, your company was excellent as always.

And just to finish it all off I had a double rainbow over Dartmoor on the way home, one happy chappy :D

Was a great weekend, and a welcome break from the workshop. Great so see the usual suspects again and have a proper chat with them, as well as meet a lot of new faces. Fish's presence has not been exaggerated. He's got a wealth of knowledge to share and a friendly way to share it. No matter what your ability, he can give you the info in an easy to follow format.

Fantastic work by Ash, Phil, Scott and Matt for organising the meet, and getting all the kit down to site (and back again). Sorry I couldn't help carry some of the gear up to the vehicles lads. I'll have to get the portable forge sorted in the future, to help make up for it.

What more can I say that hasn't already been said?

Hi all , i sadly dont log on all that often so i've only just dropped on to this thread. I only wish i had spotted it sooner . Is anyone able to come along to meets normally or is it a club thing cuz it sounds ace, or ansum! As i've said before i'm an all the gear no idea sort of a bloke at the mo' fumbling about , but lovin it, . Looks like a great time was had an i'd love to drop in on one some time if poss' cheers Daz.

First one shows (from left to right) Phil's "excited" face, Ash's brother (Joe I think) and father, Ash tending the grub (Bernie is hiding behind him), and then I think (sorry if I'm wrong) it's Chey (Cheyenne) hiding behind the tripod, with Ross at the end...

One of my favourite quotes Ever! I ain't Cornish, I'm a northerner by birth, full of Irish blood mind. But I've lived down here for ten years in the beautiful town n parish of St Columb Major and I'm more staunchly proud of the traditions and values here than I ever was of Lancashire. I love to see both the fine traditions of Cornish Wrasslin and Cornish Hurling, never had a go at wrasslin, but I loves the Hurlin as does my boy, who likes to remind me regularly of how he's a Cornishman and I ain't!!

Great to see a community, driven by individuals like yourself and your Father, doing all they can to maintain a tradition. Puts a smile on my face watching it.
The videographer did a bloody good job on that too. That's up there with the ability of any of my guys!
