One weekend while at college in Liverpool in the sixties I took a Friday afternoon coach to Keswick. The journey wasn't helped by three Liverpudlian children travelling on their own who gorged on crap the whole way until just before Ambleside they all threw up into their now empty sweety bags. At Ambleside they piled out of the coach and disposed of the bag by chucking them up onto a bus shelter roof. Foolishly I couldn't look away as they burst.

Away I walked from Keswick and didn't start to look for a night's shelter until it was getting dark, silly boy. Climbed up into some bushes but they weren't really sufficient when it started raining during the black night. Thought to move off and fell neatly over a twelve footish precipice. More sort of slithered down the slick rock face than fell but did collect a lot of earth on clothes. **@!! this for a game of soldiers I muttered to myself and very very cautiously crept along and luckily found a path.

This led me to a road which in turn found me an hotel. Posh but didn't turn a hair at the thing on their doorstep. Took my rucksack and escorted me to a single room. Posh Bushcraft does have it moments. After foraging for breakfast in the dining room I had a glorious walk Seatoller way and Saturday night was fine. Shame about having a drink from a mountain stream and turning my eyes upstream to see a dead sheep lying in it.

As the yuckies weren't on the homebound coach the rest was uneventful except that I nearly burnt Keswick down on the Sunday. I had a cheap Woollies meths stove and somehow spilt lit meths onto the pine needles in a bit of a wood near the bus station as I brewed up while waiting. Bright sunshine so I had to stamp out near invisible flames.

Lessons learned- be careful who you drink with.

Very graphic images of sick bags and a lunatic dancing to stamp out invisible flames entered my head, thanks for that story!
