Further to the discussion thread (linky above) and Ade's excellent and honest video - I have been doing a search to find some answers (and avoid my paperwork) and came across this:

Is this a part-solution? As all say, would be difficult to make in the wild unless had a drill bit to make the all important holes (or a bot of time to make a stone drill) but at least it would keep beginners happy and spur them on to the harder to use bow drill.

(anyway back to my paper work - does anyone know how to convert paperwork intoa useable bow drill/pump drill hearth?!!)

I have tried that with a set at Footsteps of Discovery (where the RV is held). It's not as easy as it looks to keep the rhythm to keep the drill turning. I'm sure it's just a matter of practise and well worth having a go at making the set I'm sure. The set I used had a lovely round flywheel which looked very nice.

Brilliant! - I've never tried this tool myself, but I have seen one used (by experience and beginners) and as Martin said if your brand new to it I don't think it's as easy as this guy makes it look but still non the less an interesting vid and something probably worth having a bash at.
