hi all,

I'm currently browsing for a lightweight water filter and have narrowed my shortlist down to these 2-

http://www.sportsdirect.com/msr-miniworks-ex-microfilter-787054?src=google

http://www.thebushcraftstore.co.uk/katadyn-mini-ceramic-water-filter-2968-p.asp

They both seem to get rid of most of the nasties but i was just wondering if anyone had any experience or issues with either,

cheers

I use this one

http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/dalesman-frontier-pro-filter-p143744

Its cheaper! Seriously though, it does what you need and you would have money spare to spend on some other goodies.

I have this one, http://www.sportsdirect.com/msr-mini...054?src=google and to be honest it's good but, bit bulky and can sometimes be a bit of a pain in the proverbial.
I have recently been looking at this.

Sawyer water filter (http://www.outdoorwarehouse.co.uk/index.cfm?action=shop.detail&b=Sawyer%20Water%20Filters&p=Sawyer%20Squeeze%20Water%20Filter%20SP131&pid=CA21A5B4-EC6F-8CC6-812C7E5FAB64F09C&cid=F0590123-93E6-4369-8E1EF4936A670469&bid=9BBDD9E1-9575-DB60-32EDC1DE665E7F2E&order=priceHigh&parent=&page=1)

I like the look/idea of the Sawer water filter but would like to know more about it also hear about it from others that have used it, until then will carry on using my millbank bag and puri tabs.

I have the Drink Safe Travel Tap which I got from backpackinglight.co.uk. I can honestly say, it's the worst purchase I've ever made from them. I tried to use it again the other day up on Dartmoor and the flow was so slow from it that it was like trying to suck water through a flannel.

I would advise, with any of these things, that you look at the flow rates and consider how important that is to you. Spending five minutes to filter a litre of water doesn't sound much but it becomes a royal pain in the a**e when all you want to do is get on and have some fun.

Chlorine Dioxide tablets are very good and, in my recent experience, leave virtually no taste to the water.

purification tabs and a clear2go bottle......cheap as chips...the tabs make it safe to drink and the bottle filters and removes the chlorine taste .

This looks the business and the right price too. Cant believe the weight as well! Do you get all three size pouches with it?

Not sure about the straw-type systems myself, i'm sure they would be fine as a reserve but like you say, sucking through a flannel aint so good when youre thirsty.
At the moment its a bitter trade off between fow rate and £££'s ! Now my short list has doubled!

I get on ok with the aquamira but like Martin says, you need to be a little patient with some of these. If I was gravity feeding I would be inclined to do it when I knew that time wasn't an issue but when using it on the bladder for direct drinking it works fine with little restriction.

Thanks guys for your replies!
At the moment I'm liking the Sawyer and aquamira more than the Katadyn and msr and both cheaper to boot!
The sawyer has the edge at the minute but I'm fickle ..oh so fickle!

It doesn't damage at all just blows the rubber ring out. Just unscrew it slightly and re tighten it and carry on. It seems to biuld up too much pressure but pump any slower and the flow stops. If you use the nalgene bottle attached to the filter it happens more often, building up pressure even quicker. That is why I use the tubing straight into the '58 water bottle. I have had the MSR for about a year and maybe filtered approx 30 litres through it but personally I don't think it'll be using it next year, she sawyer looks to be on my list from Santa. Judging by the video on the website the flow rate looks good and it's A LOT smaller and lighter than the MSR.

Definately on my list as well! As a family out on hike about(3kids, 2 dogs and me n mrs) we get through a lot of water as you can imagine and the sawyer seems to tick most of my boxes.
Thanks for the info on the msr anyway and thanks for all the other posts guys, much appreciated,

Cheers

Filters are a pain as far as I'm concerned, the best way to guarantee water quality is by using Chlorine Dioxide. It's also the lightest and considerably cheaper than the only filter thats any good (IMHO) Katadyn Pocket Filter.

Save your money on the filters and get some Chlorine Dioxide, it's usually sold in two bottle's, then get a small pre-mix bottle preferebly black in colour. Mix up enough for 24 hours in the pre-mix bottle then use it as you go in

in whatever water bottle you carry. It takes 15- 20 mins to kill everything except crytosporidium, that takes 4 hours the only other thing to worry about is it will degrade over time and in strong sunlight so only mix enough for

one day. To me water purification is about common sense and routine, you can always boil water so if you have enough fuel do that instead and you dont have to roll boil for ages either.

I know I'm a bit late with this post but I have just bought a millbank water filter bag, it only filters, -the water will still need treating (in my case boiling " the only real safe way" ) before use, this means that I only need to carry enough water for
one day & so long as I camp near a water supply ( should be no prob with all the rain we've had ) I can filter & treat the rest. The bag weigh's just a few grams much lighter than a ltr of water 1kg ?. Cheers Bri

Strange that this thread gets resurrected today as I found a weakness on the Aquamira filter that I have been recommending. It seems that the bite valve does not seem to be very strong as mine has just busted even though the filter is still pretty new from a lifespan viewpoint. Availability of spares is the next test then, not best pleased

Just saw this on the Bushcraft store:

http://www.thebushcraftstore.co.uk/pure-hydration-water-purification-thirst-aid-bag-4948-p.asp

It's like a 21st century Millbank bag (and not much more expensive than a Millbank bag can sell for on the 'bay).

Hi, i know this thread was created quite a while ago.. but as of about 2 months ago i am a proud owner of a sawyer!! it is brilliant and works a treat, i take it everywhere and is perfect for taking abroad with you.. The flow rate is good but you do have to remember you have a 1micron filter but saying this flow rate has never been a problem with me.

Cheers, Dave :campfire:

Milbank bag for me now, lost faith in the Aquamira as it broke too easily.

This is my chosen system, I use it to fill my other bottles first then top it up too! I also use water tabs as extra insurance! Cheap easily replaced & effective!

I don't have one myself and I've no idea if it is any good, but it might tickle someone's fancy.

I had three. Two had what I imagine is a pressure valve "pop-up", so getting unfiltered water through small hole in the lid. One had a very slow flow rate. And the one that lasted longest stopped filtering after far less use than I expected.

Hi!
Here is another water filter for you:
LifeStraw Water Filter Video-Review (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkQw8GA2uPc&feature=plcp)

In his video "Teil 16.1 - Auf der Kinzig (1 von 3)" he uses and explains the Katadyn Combi water filter at about 22:30, but unfortunately the video is only in german language.

I agree with ADz_1983, i went with the drinksafe too after scouring various 'pump' systems.
they all seem to be 'over complicated' which leads to breakages or malfunctions.

i ended up going for the Explorer Canteen, at 1600 liter filtering, weighs the same as any water bottle ad a safety 'close up system' and of course no moving parts it seemed to be the way to go.have used it for 6 months now,as a normal bottle (by unscrewing the filter)as well as using the filter and have never had a problem.

It's just cheaper and more reliable. It will make almost all water safe enough to drink, with the exception of chemical contaminants. As long as you're not gathering water from industrial units, train lines (certain cargos can be harmful to the environment), or agricultural land that has been sprayed with insecticides and the like, you'll be absolutely fine :)

I've had the MSRsweetwater (http://cascadedesigns.com/en/msr/water-treatment-and-hydration/basecamp-water-treatment-and-hydration/sweetwater-microfilter/product) for a few years now. It doesn't exactly pop a seal but it expels water out of a nipple when the filter needs cleaning. Not sure if that could be the issue with the previously mentioned MSR filter, but I'd highly recommend mine. Except for the price
