View Full Version : Question for spoon, bowl & cup carvers

I tried my hand at carving a spoon at the RV and really enjoyed it. So much so that I've acquired a Mora 511, which was the knife I used at the RV, for the majority of the carving and now I'm just looking for a crook/spoon knife to carve out the bowl(s).

I used a Mora 162 knife at the RV and following the principle of 'go with what you know' set about getting one.

But, while hunting for the best price online, I noticed Mora also do a 164 knife as well, which has a slightly different blade.

I was wondering if one of the more adept wood carvers on the forum, would indulge my ignorance, explain the difference between the two blades for me and offer an opinion as to whether I could get by with one or t'other of the these knives or whether I should just stop being tight fisted and just get both knives.

Many thanks,

Colin

The 162 has a bevel on both sides of the blade so would be easier to use on both sides of the bowl. The 164 only has a bevel on one side so you have to use it backwards to do the other side. Other than that, I'm not too sure.

The 164 has a tighter hook than the 162 and with it just having the one edge it is a bit stronger.
The 162 has a blade on eather side as well as a chiseled tip to it so working on a right or left hand cut is a bit easier.
But do what I did and get both lol.
To start off with get the 164 its the better of the 2 to get going with.
When you start hollowing out the bowl of your spoon cut across the grain working from the middle out and taking only small cuts. and another good idea is to weare a leather or Kevlar glove on the hand you are holding the spoon.
Hope thats a help
