This is part of the River Cottage Handbook series being No.7 of that series.

This book gives a good description of around seventy plants that can be gathered from the British countryside. It includes details of the habitat in which you might find each plant, it's distribution around the country and the time of year best to gather. Each entry has good information about the history of the plants use and makes known any toxic plants you might possibly mistake them for while foraging for them.

There's a good piece on the laws regarding foraging, a section on toxic plants to avoid and the last section is full of recipes to use all your foraged goodies.

I like the way it concentrates on a relatively small number of species that are worth foraging for, rather than trying to show all plants that can be eaten, but may well taste absolutely dire. Well worth adding to the bookshelves.

Think your right Ben, saw something on the news today re River Cottage.
Don't have this book, but if it's as informative as the Mushroom book they did, it will be well worth the money.

John Wright's 'Hedgerow' is a fantastic book.

Another 'must have' is John Wright's 'Edible Seashore' - No5 in the River Cottage Handbook series.

With those two books you'll have a good (and entertaining!) reference for inland and coastal foraging.

"Entertaining" Good word to use..
The whole series is very good from what I have seen so far. We also have the cakes and bread ones too.. Yum.

Whilst you're at it, you may as well get the Mushroom one too. Also very good.

Very clever man, luckily it wasn't his place that burnt but hugh's barn that he uses to give demos in and hold functions in.
