View Full Version : Re-handling a modified 'side axe'

I had an old small axe head kicking around, been in the garage for ages so decided to grind it for use as a side axe and make a new handle for it.

It's great steel and took some grinding in short bursts to reshape it for sharpening as a left handed side axe.

I made the handle from some seasoned American white oak and used a band saw to rough cut the blank and used a chisel, knife and sander to produce the final shape.

I produced the handle with a slight kink at the head to give me maximum clearance so I can get close to the work piece.

It has a great balance and feel and will now go into my bushcraft & green wood working kit.

Wow really nice work Mate I like that idea on giving the handle a bit of curve like you did. I am getting a hatchet from a friend soon on another board. I may use this idea for turning it to more of a carving hatchet

Can't take much of the credit, the bandsaw and sander did the heavy work and without them, I'd still be sat there now chipping away...!

I know when I get one going for my little hatchet coming to me I'll be doin it up by hand I'm toying either apple or a nice chunk of oak for mine be basing it off your design to
