Cheap quality axes

Looking for a decent axe on a budget, try searching ebay for ex military/ ex-army axes, there are some good german army and danish army axes for sale at the mo, and i purchased one of the danish hatchets and found it good value and quality.:happy-clapping:

Thanks mate, I have been looking at the Danish Army one and I will get one after Christmas, I bought one of the ones Argos were selling for £2.99, it took a while to put an edge on it but they are cracking wee axes and are about the same size as the scout axe, great value even if you aren't on a budget.

I got a Brades Criterion from old tool schools for £12, quick clean up and put a new edge on it, It is an awesome little axe.
Look out at car boots and attic/garage sales you can pick these things up for a fiver.

I remember Justin buying one of those, think he paid something daft like £2.50 or £2.99 and then spent a few hours working on it, turned it into a completely different looking axe :) Not sure if he kept it or maybe even gave it to Martin as a gift? Not sure, I'll ask.

Ah right, yeah now I remember, I think they were so cheap he bought two, one for you and one for himself. I remember the most distinct change he made was blackening up the handle or making it brown and with no markings or branding on the handle or blade it looked a lot better :)

I got myself a bacho camping axe a couple of years ago, have used at scout camps and even let the scouts have a go with it, I do find myself sharpening it on a regular basis though.

I was looking for a cheap axe after xmas, and I checked out this thread then.
In January I bought this for £11.95

I put a bit of an edge on it with an oilstone and have used it quite a bit since.

However, I sanded off the kak varnish and paint, and spent the evening with Matt kindly showing me how to get a ding out of it and put a proper edge on it too. Teak oil to finish it off, and this is what he looks like now...

I'm proper stoked with my 'new' axe. Its first job (after a shave in the mornin :D ) will be carving a paddle, something I couldn't have done with it yesterday.

Some of the cheaper modern axes can be made from inferior steel. They may polish up nice and work well for a while, but after prolonged use the brittle nature of the poor steel always comes through
The best option is to look in car boot sales - most of those old tools were made of much better steel.
You also get the added bonus of buying yourself a project - cleaning and sharpening the blade plus having to put a new handle on it!

I see that Gransfors Axes are only £56 (small forest axe) Its not that much for a tool that will last a life time in my opinion

I'll tell ye b4 he does... me and he had an axe off as we both scored 16. In the axe off we drew again, so it went to best of 6 axes. I went first and threw KAK! and only scored 3..... So Ash won, by loads!! He did hand me one of the prizes, as I was a graceful loser, he was an honourable winner. :D

Well, Ash showed me how to throw a few weekends b4, then had a couple of evenings practice, so in that respect, I should Big meself up! But thats not my way ;)

In all seriousness; the axe throwing competition was great and Phil did a grand job. We were out camping one weekend and I showed him how to throw tomahawks, he took to it very well. It's a funny thing axe throwing & consistency, the best the advice I could give is: go at it confidently.

I was really surprised at its performance Martin, I've used it loads since last sharpening in Feb, and it's still got a good edge :D
