I get asked about my SnugPak Hammock Cocoon (which you can see in my review here (http://www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/kit/reviews/hammock-cocoon-what-is-a-hammock-cocoon.html)) all the time and of course I get asked where people can buy them quite a lot.

I've never really have an answer because as far as I knew they were a bespoke item, made as a result of a BCUK Group-buy (I purchased mine 2nd hand) and the only other way you could get your hands on one was apparently to organise a group buy of a least 10 people willing to buy the cocoon and then apparently SnugPak would make them.

For ages I've harrased SnugPak on the behalf of others via email, website & twitter all to no avail - that was until tonight!

I've just had one tweet back from them saying:

@NaturlBushcraft Sorry for the late Reply, the Cocoons no longer need to be purchased as a group you can buy them via any Snugpak retailer.

What!? What retailer? If you Google for "SnugPak Hammock Cocoon" or variations you don't find anything? I've friends who have also scoured the net looking for these, all you find are references to second hand ones being sold on other forums, I've never seen one for sale from a retailer?

If anyone has please let us know where you saw it for sale!

I must say I'm a little disappointed with SnugPak customer relations over all.

they say that if you contact any of their retailers that they can order one in for you,i mentioned ash's tweet and the guy said that the reason nothing is coming up on google must be because their retailers must not be advertising them but they definitely are available through their retailers,he told me the recommended retail price is £ 99.95 :)

just need the £99.95 now lol

Nice try chaps... But no cigar! That's just the under-blanket (both on the PDF catalogue & the website) no mention of the Cocoon anywhere!?

I find this a little hard to believe, if it's not in any of their catalogues or websites and there's not a single retailer online who stocks/sells it - I think they're not interested in producing or selling it so the retailers aren't even aware of it?

I'm gona do some more enquiring when I get time.

Is that the price for the underquilt. I want an underquilt not interested in the cocoon as part of the appeal of the hammock for me is being able to see out.

sorry ash didnt se your reply,i rang snugpak's office and he seemed pretty convincing but i get completely what your saying
i thought after the phone conversation that they were pretty silly not advertising it anywhere themselves without the retailer doin it for them but as you say maybe their just not interested in making it at all, maybe theirs not enough profit in it for them.......slaves to the dollar ;)

I've contacted OutdoorGB who are a Snugpak stockist. They have requested details from Snugpak and will contact me when their website has been updated showing the cocoon. As soon as they contact me I'll post details and a link on here.

It's never been mentioned in SnugPak's 2010 or 2011 catalogues, I'm pretty sure the the retailers aren't really aware of it. Helpful stockists may ask SnugPak, let's see what prices they get quoted.

i emailed DD hammock's last week because their a Snugpak supplier and asked them about them getting a cocoon for me,they were aware of them and thought they could get me one but i got a reply from them this evening basically saying that they had recieved a reply from Snugpak about the hammock cocoon's and they no longer make them and that they were only ever made in small amounts for group buy's on Bushcraft UK for a short length of time and they hav'nt made any in quite a while now.............great customer service from DD as usual but Snugpak don't seem to know whats goin on there at all, their office gave me a R.R.P. last Thursday week :happy-clapping:

guess i'll just have to get a DD underblanket and a new sleeping bag :)

I can confirm that SnugPak are confusing the hell out of people, I believe it's a case of their staff on the phone misunderstanding the terminology; sometimes when a customer is saying "hammock cocoon" they are wrongly assuming they're talking about the "hammock under-blanket". They've been useless at responding to any of my emails to their sales or marketing.

Unfortunately it's wasted a lot of people's time, I personally know a fair few people who would have bought one had they been readily available.

Iif they were available i would definatly buy a hammock and cocoon and use that as my main set up.

I can confirm I have spoken with DD Hammocks who have contacted SnugPak, SnugPak say they are no longer stocking or making these cocoons. That's what I suspected :(

DD Hammocks did hint at the fact they are working on a 'hammock friendly sleeping bag' though!

For what its worth the Snugpak underblanket is a very nice, warm and easy piece of kit to use. I tied loops in all the shock chords and attached to a mini carabiner at each end that is in turn fixed to my suspension by a prussik loop. This keeps it all taught and close to the hammock. It is fitted in seconds. Got the idea off the RVops video on Youtube.
Sleeping bagwise I find a centre zipped bag can be flipped over and used a s a very nice top quilt. I use this bag by Highlander, that I'm very pleased with. http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/shop/camping-equipment/sleeping-bags/new-military-style-highlander-666758.html
It works great as a top quilt and is surprisingly warm for a light bag.

cheers

Good find Adam! Had a look around for some more info on that top link and found this. You may need to zoom in as the page comes in quite small but this option looks interesting http://grizzlymike.com/camping/High_Peak_sleeping_bags/PANDA_HAMMOCK_SLEEPING_BAG_00204.GIF

Also found this one here (http://www.equinecaninefeline.com/catalog/hanging-sleeping-hamsters-nylon-14x12cm-p-7576.html)

Looks like the 3/4 length one, but I could be wrong. Not sure if Snugpak made a 3/4 though, just looks short.

I'd just like to point out that that link is for an under blanket and not a cocoon. I have the Snugpak under blanket which is a great bit of kit but it's not the cocoon that Ashley originally posted about here. :)

Am I right in thinking, Snugpak (through DD, I think) will still make the cocoons, if 10 or more people are purchasing them?

No Jonksy, I posted that in February, in response to a listing at that time. This is really for a cocoon but I can't believe how high the price is.

its at £127 plus postage now,i got the underblanket, the whoopie sling system and a 3x3 tarp from DD Hammocks for £138 and a free t shirt !!
think they went for around the £80 mark in the group buy on bcuk, that guy aint done too bad for himself, basically paid £50 to have the cocoon for a few years lol
its obvious theirs a market for them, that listing has 14 bids on it,thats 14 customers snugpak lost and god knows how many more if it was still been produced,i think it was a bad call by them to dis-continue the cocoon,my main problem with the underblanket is that you still have to get a 4 season sleepin bag to use it in the colder months but you dont need such a big sleepin bag with the cocoon and thats a major sellin point !

anyhows, has anyone seen the cocoon and underblanket,i ask cause i just want to know if the fill is similar or lighter,to me the underblanket is like one of their sleepin bags but ive never seen the cocoon to gauge the difference between them

one thing i noticed with the underblanket is that you can close it over the top of you by 3 tags down either side of the underblanket that can be tied together,i'd say a small 40mm carabiner (keyring type) would close them over nicely and basically your in a cocoon just not as sealed as the proper cocoon
