Just seen on the news that there could be a couple of titanium fuel cells from a rogue satellite on there way shortly. Apparently they expect the rest of the satellite to burn up in the atmosphere but the 2mm thick Ti is so strong it will remain intact! Must be worth a few quid eh?

Titanium is actually not very strong, the reason why it might be use din the newer Orion spacecraft (and satellites) to take man to Mars and the Moon is that it is the strongest-lightest metal.

Titanium - Tensile strength of 63k psi breaking strain.

Tungsten - Tensile is around 75k psi breaking strain.

If I'm correct that is.

The older space shuttles (Endeavor, Atlantis) Used Ceramic tiles mostly and Ti-Al alloys.
