I was just wondering if you guys had any tips on making campcraft furnitiure like chairs, stools, tables etc or do you just pull up a stump and sit on that? I could fashion a chair of sorts ( the hammock one is quite easy) but it is time comsuming, has anybody got any good ideas for chairs, stools and the like?

It's the first item on my kit list when we have a local meet. I don't mind lugging a chair for up to a mile as the benefit, in terms of comfort, is well worth the cost.

Anyone who's been to one of the Cornwall meets will have seen my bushcraft reclining throne and normally tried to steal it at about 10.00 pm when their back is aching. ;)

There's a youtube video probably from hobbesxp but don't quote me on that where he makes a chair with a towel and a tripod cut from sticks. the top of the towel is tied to the crux of the tripod and another stick put through the bottom hem of the towel and leaned against the two forward legs looks good and you only have to carry the towel.

You can do the same with a cheap net hammock - like the gelert one, fold it in half and hang the rings of one of the tripod poles, stick a bough through the poles and lean that up against the forward legs. I think Sean at Silverfox has a video on the hammock chair and how to set one up.

Yeah, the hammock one is well known, but I was thinking more along the lines of something entirely crafted from wood or such, maybe a stool made from a split log and 4 legs fitted to holes made with an auger, problem is they tend to splay with my weight!

Ahh you, refer to the 'slab pig' type stool. Take a large log split it down the centre, auger out 4 holes and fit legs with pegs. Have a look at this, its an old guide for woodsman, has many interesting ideas and concepts, including the 'Slab pig'

Hope this helps

iawoodsman has a youtube vid as does the silverfox on making hammock seats. A pc of car inner tube-I think you folks on the other side of the pond may call it tyrre?? A bit heavy but can be set out as a water proof pad and one can trim strips off the edges to light very wet wood. It isn't my first choice due to the weight.

That's it Gary, great wee stools, though doesn't seem like anybody else makes anything like that..they are just the ticket.

Making something like above is easy and good for seats and working on, food prep etc etc... You just need a scotch eyed auger as well as you usual axe, saw and knife..

Here is my lad making his first one..

Couple of benches in the Copse..

Btw.. Scotch eyed augers can be bought cheap here.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SCOTCH-EYED-AUGER-1-BUSHCRAFT-/110628779588?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item19c1fd3644#ht_500wt_1156

As mentioned.. Poshcrafting is always an option..

Great benches Jonny.

Cheers Gary.. That three legged one in front is my shave horse.
We were getting ready for a party over there (making as many seats as pos), at the same time Chris Evans had his party in the field Radio 2 event, just down the lane.
