Off to good ol' Darters tomorrow morning. Will be taking photos and hopefully some more video, so should have something of interest to someone, upon my return. Will keep y'all posted.

Probably including such evens as...

The scrumpy aftermath..

Just returned. Left my SLR up at Ivan's house, so most photos will have to wait until I can get that back (I'm a little disappointed in myself for that, sorry guys), but I think I have a couple on my mobile that I can post soon as I get them on the comp.

It's not too far from Newton Abbot, so might have to look into that. Heading back down next Wednesday all being well.

We did mate. Started work on the lean to shelter for the meet, just needs a good thatching of bracken and the bedding completed now. Set up a communal tarp for the learning/demonstration area (also social gathering place for the lower end of the camp) and built a fair pile of firewood ready too.

Plenty more fun to be had if you can make it to the meet, a week friday. If not it's always fun down there lol. You also missed me helping Ivan lay some granite steps up at the house, kept us busy for a few hours.

Ok, I have four pics of the trip so far.

The firewood stocks so far and a fire set for the evening...

It's not as extreme as it looks. There were four large logs of beech around the base, to contain the fire and support the cooking grill when the centre burns down to coals, and the big lump on it was sopping wet from being semi immersed in marsh for a couple months. It did burn well until about 1 or 2 am and still hot and glowing, ready to be kicked back into life, at 6:30am for coffee.

The history of Dartmoor is rich and steeped in folklore. Many of todays names have evolved over the years and are almost unrecogniseable compared to their former names.

For those who are interested, there are several really good websites and dozens of books on the subject.

I'm making my way through some sites slowly lol. Gives me something to do between projects and camping. If you have any links, feel free to stick them on this thread. Although started for a minor trek on Dartmoor, I think the title lends itself to anything Dartmoorish.

I think it would be great to establish a list of great wild camping spots across the moor. We didn't see too many really good places on the weekend did we. We saw plenty of rivers and loads of hills covered in tussocks but we didn't see too many flat spots near to the river.

The Devonian lot are a bit funny about this one. To be called local you have to be born and bred, and to be considered even remotely accepted as part of the community you must have lived here for 20years.

Adam Savage

Don't worry buddy, I wouldn't dream of classing myself Devonian. I'm as proud of my origins as you. The human race is a funny species, even after thousands of years of civilisation and centuries of communal living, we're still very territorial.

I get called plenty of things but none of them resemble devonian :D . I have only just passed the twenty year mark of living in the same town and reckon there is probably more 'outsiders' than 'locals'! And as for origins, wouldn't have a clue what mine are, born in Kettering, moved between Northants, Wilts, Battersea, Oxford...

This county is blessed with many amazing places, beautiful scenic views, natural wonders, and millenia of history. Devon is one of the top, on my list. Cornwall, Dorset, Lake District, Peak District, the Highlands...all equally fantastic places.

Got to agree with you on this one. Spent all my adult life here and have family dotted around the country. When visiting them I can't wait to get back to North Devon, its home where no other place has felt like it. This county, along with with Cornwall where I work quite a bit, is a truly beautiful place and nothing would pull me away from it.

Hi chaps, just reading your posts here, I'm looking for a good spot on Dartmoor for some camping with hammocks this May (2012). It is my first outing with the hammocks so any grid references or advice would be most welcome. Great pics btw!

Adam Savage

Hi there Sarah. The best person, with a nice long list, would be Martin. I'm sure he will pop by and suggest some places of interest.
There are plenty of nice spots on Dartmoor, it just depends if you want to park near by, walk miles, camp where there are facilities, and things like that.
You mention Hammocks, and Dartmoor is quite limited on wooded areas to camp "officially", but I know of a couple folk who own woods down there. I could get in touch with them and see if they can accommodate you for a few nights or so. We hold regular meets in one of them, and you'd be more than welcome to pop down and have a look see, join in, have a natter round the fire, or whatever.

Adam

Sarah

Thanks for the fast reply Adam, I'm pretty open minded about the sort of site but maybe not to have to walk to far from our vehicle as it is our first outing and I don't mind not having facilities. If you have any contacts with woodlands that would be very much appreciated as I think being able to have a fire is a big part of the experience and from what i have read it is a big no-no on Dartmoor itself. I'd certainly be interested in one of your meets!

Adam Savage
20-01-2012, 08:19 PM
He doesn't get on Natural bushcraft very often, but I'm pretty sure he checks his inbox. If you send him (Ivan) a message, he'll be able to sort dates out with you. If you're after a peaceful time, without a load of strangers about, he'll let you know when it'll be quiet/empty.
The next organised meet is 23rd March-25th March, if you're interested. The thread for it is on another forum, but he can always give you the details.
Fires are a little sensitive, as far as the national park goes, not to say it's not done, or that it's wrong or right. You won't have any problems with Ivan, he always has a fire burning :)

Here's the link to his profile on here http://www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk/forum/member.php?2635-Ivan
