My Second Knife
A Hand Forged Blade by Dave Budd

This is the second knife I have produced. A hand forged blade made by a Devon knifemaker Dave Budd. I enjoyed hard-carving two Zebrano wood slates to make the handle for this knife. I spent many hours working with just hand-tools; my knife and hand-sanding.

Blade: Hand Forged by Dave Budd (Purchased at Royal Cornwall Show)
Wood:
Zebrano
Finish:
Linseed Oil

fixing my zebrano wood handle to my knife with araldite and clamps

I spent a long while carving on the inside of the wood slates, gradually adjusting and testing how the metal tong fit between them. I kept carving until the wood-slates until they touched near enough flat with the tong inside. I then fixed the blade into the wood using slow-setting Araldite (epoxy-resin). I made a quick video clip showing you the knife whilst it was clamped up, with over-dramatic music! Watch below:

The Zebrano wood gives a interesting grain and I couldn't wait to see it shaped and oiled.

And here's the finished product:

I think the handle is still a little bulky, but the blade and edge is great, its a functional knife and an improvement on my first knife. I could have documented the making process a little closer for the site, I will try to do that in future projects!
