Thread: Hello!

    Hello!

Hi, my name's Sophie, me and my fiance are talking about eventually going off-grid, having our own energy means, crops, animals (for milk and eggs, we are veggies) etc etc.
I have quite a dilemma at the minute, we both suffer from different illnesses that prevent us from holding down jobs, ie depression, anxiety, and I have a skin disease called HS, because of that we live with his parents. We are building a heart-centered business, he crafts out of wood, metal and is building his own forge and I read tarot cards and other types of psychic readings.
Our goal is to have our hut or yurt in a woodland area of the UK, where we can run our business, give back to the Earth and quit the rat race.
Because of our lack of funds at the minute, we are aiming to build a small hut in his parent's back garden to get a little bit of space, start gaining skills and to help us prepare for the real deal.
I'm really interested in any ideas or tips that you may have to help us.
What would you have liked to know before doing it?
    Thanks x

    Hello Sophie and welcome.

I cannot give you holistic advice but in terms of gaining new (bushcraft) skills, you will pick up far more by actually having a go and making your own mistakes. There are often meets (published on the forum) and these are excellent opportunities to learn new skills. I have always found the bushcraft community generous with it's knowledge whether on this forum or our and about - I'm sure you'll be able to make great use of it.

    Cheers,

    M@

Thank you! I'll have a good look into the meets etc!
That's what I thought, we prefer to be practical and hands on so that'll do brilliantly for us if we can find something.
    Thanks again!

Hi Sophie, first of all just wanted to say...good on you!
More and more people are "waking up" from the slumber many perceive as reality, me included, and taking baby steps towards changing their world around them...starting within.

You've come to the right place, lots of helpful folk here, very friendly and very knowledgeable.
Lots of resources to get through if you dig deep into the forum...

OK, so first up id like to put you in the direction of permaculture.

Theirs is a beautiful and intelligent approach and not at all limited by plot size, money or any conventional constraints.
Their community is very helpful and full of great ideas.

    Next is Mr. Ben Law.
If you search his website is great.
A good introduction to his life is a book called "woodsman", and on one of his books, (not sure if it's the woodsman) he actually guides you through the mistakes he made and how to avoid them... from dealing with councils and red tape , to hedge laying....

    his approach is excellent too...

Next there's a place called tinkers bubble... Google it or go here...

For a few bargains and some freebies head over here...

And finally here is a gift. It is a free book, a very good book, and though this is free , I recommend you buy the actual book as it's much better than reading it on screen...

Hope it helps on your quest.

I wish you all the best with your plans. It sounds like a lot of fun and will hopefully help with the negative things you are both struggling with
