Any one got experience of the Carinthia Defence 1

    Hi all,

can any of you folk tell me what the Defence 1 is like?

I have read lots about the Defence 4 and seen one in a shop but there is very little info/opinion available on the Defence 1.

What I like the Def1 is the waterproof and windproof qualities of the fabric which means I wont need a bivi bag when used under a tarp. This means that I can have a sleeping bag that weighs just 1050g without the additional weight of a bivi bag. I'm into being a light as possible so that's important to me.

My main question is how warm is the Def1? Is the temp rating of +3*C accurate do you think.

Given that the Def4 seems to be considered a proper 4 season bag with 1000g of insulation, it seems likely to me that the Def1 with 550g of it should be a good 2 season bag.

Also, I can't picture in my mind how I would get on with the face hole instead the usual hood.

Is it possible/comfy to stick your head out with the zip not done right up when the weather is warm?

    What do you reckon?

    Thanks for your input.

I believe that HM Forces may be getting Carinthia in the future to replace Snugpak

Do you mean the Def1 will be replacing the army jungle bag?

If so we may be able to get the Def1 as surplus at some point.

Not sure, you'll have to ask some one who is more current with the latest MOD kit

Comfort and season ratings depend on the person too...a larger person will generally be warmer than a skinny one in the same bag as it takes longer to lose heat on a larger mass.

I understand that but I'm trying to gauge opinion before I decide whether to buy or not as it's not a cheap bag.
